I have been enjoying this website for a few months now and have finally registered. Here's my first post...I am finishing my basement and I'm going to designate the main room as the "Space Room". I have numerous collectables, photos, posters, models, stamps, etc, but am unsure of how I will display them all. I'm sure more than a few of you have done something similar. Any ideas or thoughts would be most appreciated.

First of all, welcome. You will find this site an incredibly valuable resource in pursuit of your hobby goals.

My family's den doubles as my space room. I don't know that I have any suggestions, other than to enjoy it to the fullest!!!

Not sure what the situation is in the US but here in the UK most basements tend towards being damp.

Might be worth checking the walls for any moisture before hanging anything valuable on them?

Cheers,
Matt

It is a great way to set up an area of the basement. My basement steps actually land at a small 10x10 general area and I have set it up with a bookcase for many of my space related books, a dresser (with the top used for two models) and then I use the walls for a number of Bean prints and a few other space prints and autographs.

Welcome SpaceBob, Maybe I can help out from time to time.
I retired a couple of years ago and took on the same project in my basement. I am both an avid early Sci-fi space collector as well as I collect space stuff, but mainly patches.

The tip that Matt gave you is the most important of all. Make SURE your basement is climate controlled and dry before putting anything of value. Secondly NEVER no matter how sure you are about the soundness of the basement put anything directly on the floor. Pipes can burst and you can imagin the consequences of those type of accidents. Put a dehumidifier in the basement if your heating or cooling system does not have one.

The Space theme is a great one but I wouldn't just limit it to one room in the basement unless you have to. Carry the theme throughout the rooms in your basement if possible. My wife's interior design experience along with my woodworking skills allowed us to make a great theme that blends early sci-fi art and toys with the modern space program throughout every room in the basement. We have a kitchenett, game room, bathroom, an office, and a guest bedroom in the basement and use the art - toys and collectables in every room. Some of the best comments have come about the art in the bathroom. They must have more time to study it in there!
Let know if I can help with an idea. I have a significant financial investment in Robots, Rayguns, Rockets, space patches, and artwork in my basement and enjoying it everyday, but also keenly aware of the protection it needs. Framing is outstanding for many of the visuals but do it right with quality archival materials if it has value. Becareful of the lighting you use or if outside UV's are a threat because you can fade artwork and painted items. Make sure your paint is good and dry before putting things on shelves because fresh paint can react to an item you place there. Use plastic or rubber as a base if you think there could be a reaction. Keep all items above the waist for good viewing and protection from accidents. Make a video or picture inventory and make sure it's INSURED if you have valuable items.
Sorry for the long post, but I lived this project for three years before I was proud enough to show it off to the world and I am still excited about the outcome.

I may be a little strange, but I have stuff all over my house.
My living room is a pre-shuttle theme (Apollo, Mercury...etc), the dining room is all Shuttle stuff, the family room is Aviation, and the bedroom is kind of a mix of things.

I appreciate the response you all have given. After being married for 21 years I feel lucky enough just to have the basement to myself let alone the whole house.I have built another smaller room next to the "space room" that my 9 yr old son and I will use as our model building room.I have plans to decorate it with old model ads from when I was a kid.
I would like to cover one or more of the space room walls with moonscape murals. I might try painting myself or possibly trying to have photos turned into wallpaper. Has anyone attempted this?

Welcome SpaceBob,
My "Space" Room will adjoin my "Sports" Room. The "Space" room is our spare room right next to our garage which is soon to be my future "Sports" lounge. Unfortunately its going to take a while. My plan for the "Space" room, however, is to start at one corner with my Mercury collectables and work around the room from Gemini to Apollo to Skylab to Shuttle to ISS. I'm a graphic artist and plan to paint a mural on the wall that will include Shuttle artifacts. There are some full wall size photo murals that you can buy. The two I'm thinking of right now is a Moonscape, probably Apollo 17 and the Shuttle in orbit. I do know of several people who have had photos blown up to mural size anf used as wallpaper but, never NASA photos. There maybe a copyright issue there. Anyway, good luck and keep us infromed of your progress.
