There is a rumor circulating that Google may go after eBay with its own product called Google base. Do a search on your favorite news site and you will find numerous stories.

Competition is good. But, would they weed out the bad guys, or just give them another market? Depends on the oversight I guess.

At present, Google Base sounds more like a hosted database solution for content providers (think GoogleSQL) rather than an eBay competitor (although I have read the articles that suggest such).

Here is what the front page of Google Base read when it was briefly live:

quote:
Post your items on Google.

Google Base is Google’s database into which you can add all types of content. We’ll host your content and make it searchable online for free.

Examples of items you can find in Google Base:

  • Description of your party planning service
  • Articles on current events from your website
  • Listing of your used car for sale
  • Database of protein structures

You can describe any item you post with attributes, which will help people find it when they search Google Base. In fact, based on the relevance of your items, they may also be included in the main Google search index and other Google products like Froogle and Google Local.

  • A collectSPACE example might be populating a Google Base with Sightings data, so it could be searched via Google. The eBay connection seems to stem from the suggestion that a list of items for sale could be posted, but it does not sound as though Google is providing bidding or payment processing tools.

Either way, it will be interesting to watch!
