Hi everybody, I am wondering if astronauts collect space items or autographs. Surely they get their own flight memorabilias or their personal stuff they carry with them on the flight, but do they collect systematically? I know that some are stamp/cover collectors but what about autographs? Sure, they are near to the stuff, but may regard it as somewhat silly asking their fellows for signatures. Otherwise: Are astronauts/cosmonauts among the members of this community? I do not want to know their nick names but maybe someone just can tell me the number, or if none of them is on this board. thanks Chris

The question is somewhat odd - are there astronauts that do jogging? Are there astronauts who are occasionnally victims to rainshowers? Are there astronauts who like Chinese food? The answer will most probably be "yes" to all of the questions, as astronauts are just people who might or might not have this or that hobby. I know of a few who collect stamps. I know a few who do paintings. I have seen astronauts ask each other to sign 'tis or 'tat during their conferences. Would an astronaut travel to Burbank to pay and collect autographs of fellow astronauts? Well this I seriously doubt .....

When I gave John Glenn a portrait I painted of him, he said it would be a great addition to his collection of memorabilia of his flight.Ed |

I forget what book it was in - and let's not get into a discussion as to whether or not they're considered astronauts - it's mentioned that the 10 Teacher-in-Space finalists signed photos for each other. Come to think of it, if astronauts weren't in collecting autographs, why do a few of them have signed crew photos that they occasionally mail out to collectors? I would think they'd save a few for themselves and for their family, and give out the rest to special (or lucky) people; same thing with insurance covers. Have any signed photos inscribed to an astronaut ever come on the market? If I'm not mistaken (and it's the closest thing I can think of), doesn't Donnis have for sale a piece to Grissom's wife signed by 20 or so astronauts?

As perhaps the biggest fans of the space program, I wouldn't be surprised if most, if not all, astronauts considered themselves collectors to some degree. When I met Scott Kelly, I was wearing an MPLM patch, and he mentioned that he didn't have one. So, I sent him and his brother Mark each an MPLM patch. It never occurred to me that they wouldn't at least collect patches. --John

The late Karl Henize was a stamp collector. We invited him to our Space Unit national meeting in Houston in 1991. He came and gave a talk on 51F. Then he stuck around for our mini-auction of space covers at the end of the meeting, where he bought some 51F covers that he didn't have in his collection. Then he went up to our after-meeting trade session, had a beer, and told us about covers he carried on the ASSESS test in the late '70's. He was a collector! And a nice guy!![This message has been edited by micropooz (edited March 31, 2005).] |
