Speaking from thousands of miles away...I know that he lives down by the beach area. Not much of a forest there, but I'm sure plenty of smoke and ash right about now. |

Steve is well, with the nearest fire being some 30 miles away. He said it looks like it's snowing, but otherwise everything is OK for now.James |

The UK news coverage has shown several maps of where the fires are. Some of these maps seem to indicate that the fires may be lapping around the JPL Pasadena area and the Rocketdyne test stands.Anyone know how close ? Phill |

Well, JPL ought to be OK, but there are fires in the Santa Susanna mountains where the old test stands were. No idea if they were affected. Dan |

DannoThanks for update. Are the Santa Susanna test stands still used? Are they still standing :-) Should be classed a US National Monument in my book - if they are not already ! |

Hello Everyone,Thanks to all who were concerned about my well being. Fortunately, I'm just fine and was never in harm's way down here by the beach. Many are not that lucky however.... ------------------ Steve Hankow http://www.farthestreaches.com |

Gemtlemen - The Rocketdyne test facility is alive and well. The fire came within 1-2 miles of it The chronology from Simi Valley (which got a bit hot)heading SouthWest 1) was Box Canyon and Wolsey Canyons then 2)Rocketdyne and then 3) Bell Canyon (our offices). All of the canyons were evacuated BUT the fire was stopped at the edges of Box and Wolsey canyons (luckily). In answer to the other questions as to whether or not the Rocketdyne test stands were still being used. They are. I attended a special AIAA field trip to the Facility a year or two ago during which the facility was dedicated as a National Space Monument (or some such)and, as part of the event, there was a test firing of an engine in one of the stands (I think it was just coincidence that the Event and the test were condicted at the same time, but no matter). Quite an impressive sight and sound show. Regards...Michael Orenstein |

MikeThanks for update on Rocketdyne test stands. I'm pleased the fire stopped just short - bit too short by the sounds of it But pleased everyone safe in that area. Also, pleased it was dedicated as a national monument - since it deserved to be - as it contributed so much to early missile and rocket programs as well,of course,Apollo and later. Phill UK
