FYI. An AP article in the Grand Rapids press on November 19th noted that Clifford Frondel, "a moon rock scientist" had died. According to the piece, Mr. Frondel was "a Harvard University mineralogist who was among the first people to study rocks brought back from the moon, died last Tuesday of complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 95. Frondel was recruited by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to view a box of 48 pounds of moon rocks brought back to Houston by Apollo 11 astronauts from the Sea of Tranquillity on July 25, 1969. Frondel was credited with discovering 48 new types of minerals, and had two minerals -- Cliffordite and Frondelite -- named in his honor."Robert's got a link (under the news section) to a complete article on Frondel. It is worth checking out. My thoughts and prayers to his family. [This message has been edited by rjurek349 (edited November 20, 2002).] |
