My sons Dave and Will called me to say that the news reported that Thomas Kelly passed away at 74. Last fall we sent 3 copies of Moon Lander to Mr. Kelly along with three rubber balls for him to sign. He did so and returned the items as we requested. My sons 15, 12 and 8 each sent Mr. Kelly drawings they did of the LEM on the moon as a thank you. Mrs. Kelly wrote them a nice note saying how much they had enjoyed the boy's pictures.

I want to offer my family's condolences to the Kellys.

Thomas Kelly was an innovator who led a group at Grumman which built the craft that put 12 men to the surface of the moon and back safely. They did this with a craft that could not be flown or tested in earth's gravity. The LEM also helped save the crew of Apollo 13 and, in my opinion, is one of the greatest designs of the 20th century.

Thomas Kelly touched my family, for this I feel lucky. His book "Moon Lander" and his episode "Spider" in "The Earth to the Moon" will keep his memory alive for boys like mine for generations to come. God bless Thomas Kelly

Bill Walton

I am positing this here and in the Autograph section because that is where I first obtained his address and information about "Moon Lander".

If anyone missed, and most of us probably did, the Andrew Chaikin piece about Tom Kelly on NPR this morning, it is in the Archives on the NPR site. I'll hunt down the link in a bit.

Andrew Chaikin was kind enough to grant permission for his tribute to Tom Kelly to be reproduced on collectSPACE:
http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-033002a.html

(From that page you can also find a link to the audio version recorded for the NPR.)
