Astronaut John Young has a staggering number of historic spaceflight firsts and NASA records included in his service record. Young flew on board the first manned Gemini mission, operated the first computer on a manned spacecraft, flew on two Apollo moon missions, and was mission commander on the very first flight of the Space Shuttle. His six spaceflights (seven, if you count his liftoff from the moon on Apollo 16) tie a NASA record. Yet for all his accomplishments in the sky, few are aware of a unique land speed record that John Young also holds.WHAT UNIQUE LAND SPEED RECORD DOES ASTRONAUT JOHN YOUNG HOLD?

Yes, I think it must be. LRV-2 reached a top speed of 10 kilometers per hour during Apollo 16's third EVA on the moon in April 1972. But on another occasion while going downhill the lunar rover reached a max speed of 17 kilometers per hour in which John Young was the driver. | |
