Imagine if a laser was produced that could erase writing on surfaces (there probably is one !)
Then imagine that you could have all your ISP's lasered to remove the personalizations, without leaving any trace and without damaging the photo underneath.

Would you or wouldn't you have this done ?
Would it instantly raise the value of our collections (or lower it) ?
Would you buy an item that had been "worked on" ?

Happy collecting....Adam Bootle

Good question Adam .... My personal answer will fly in the face of convention.I WOULD NOT remove dedications if I could.I do not have the "undedicated WSS spacesuit pic" mania. Dedications do NOT trouble me. Personally , I prefer that photos I own do have personalizations...TO ME. Down the line (in the future) beyond our generation, I do not believe that the price or rarity of a signed Neil Armstrong pic will be affected at all by whether it is dedicated or not. I also believe that an inscription adds "character" to the item as well as giving an insight into the signers mind and additional examples of their handwriting.
I have a couple of examples of poorly done "dedication removals" in my collection and the photo is greatly diminished. My prime example is a Neil Armstrong signed X-15 photo that some idiot ruined by attempting to remove someones name even though the Armstrong signature remains perfect. I further realize that you are speaking of a "magic elixer" approach to dedication removals.
Inscriptions do add character and I frankly find non inscribed WSS photos to be somewhat boring. I prefer more interesting photos that define an event or occurance (something different) instead of a stark WSS photo (Yawn). However, I do realize that "value" is greatly affected by inscriptions and dedications. I further realize that I am in a vast minority .I collect the way I prefer to collect as do we all and that is fine. Most of what we collect IS HISTORY and we are only the custodian of that history while we are still alive on this Earth. Others that follow in our footsteps might feel differently that we do and 200 years from now, the owner of a of a Neil Armstrong signed photo will not care one iota who a pic is dedicated to ....that person will only count his blessings that he/she has one at all.
If I had a signed photo of Christopher Colombus (I know cameras were not invented yet) and the photo said " To Queen Isabela: Thanks for bankrolling my trip to the new world....it was a trip of a lifetime !!! Your faithful servant....Christopher Colombus" , do you think that photo would be better if it was just signed starkly "Chris Colombus" ? I know this example is an "reach" but I suspect you understand my thought process.
I would not buy a "worked on " pic . I really believe it is a cheat on history. The Neil Armstrong/x-15 item I mentioned earlier on was obtained in a minor trade situation and I was willing to live with it's shortcomings. Anyway, all collectors collect differently and to each his/her own. This is simply my opinion and I am not trying to convince anyone as there is no right or wrong.....just opinions and this is mine ! Best to all...Donald Brady

I agree with Don, I would not buy a Pic that was "worked on."

Personalizations to someone other then Andy would be my third choice behind To Andy, 1st, and non-personalized second.

Happy holidays to everyone.

An odd little "wrong" inscription story:

I was working on my first novel (which I've shelved as being essentially a giant piece of tripe) and very very into the story as I wrote it. A near future political/space thriller. Well, my protagonist, whose name was Donovan, was at this crisis moment and walked into his office and picked up a particular book (Ben Bova's "The High Road") inscribed to him by his favorite author (I admit, this was self-indulgent writing at its worst, but I continue!), so then, just a couple of days after struggling on how to write this scene, I wander into Chicago's The Stars My Destination, and find a use copy of this book (in an edition I had been hunting for for some time), I buy it for a dollar and I flip it open when I get home and see an inscription:

To Don -

Perspective is everything.

/s/ Ben Bova

It's not my name, but I wouldn't give up that inscription for just about anything...

Although I don't collect autographs ... I believe it's great to have the astronaut's handwriting as well ...
