Just got back from the opening of the new Space Centre at Leicester. The turnout was a little disappointing and to be fair they were not quite ready, many of the hands on sections had the gremlins and there appeared areas not finished. As a fan of manned spaceflight I thought it was lacking in this are but as British we haven't much to shout about in.
Jeff Hoffman opened it after the man struggled in the wind with hundreds of balloons and the wife tracked him down with the tickets and he signed both, opening day and first theatre show signed by Mr.Hoffman, not a bad day!

Glad you enjoyed it. I hope to pay a visit later in the year, I only returned from from my trip to Florida yesterday. Have they got a web site?

How was Florida? Did you manage to visit the KSC?

Hi Jacqueline,
You responded to my update about my Story Musgrave litho on the 'buy/sell forum.
Yes I visited KSC for the 5th year out of the last 6. My family and I initially visited this year, on Saturday 16th June, specifically to meet with Story and get my vintage litho of him in his WSS, signed. Unfortunately although he was still being advertised as appearing, he had to fly to Washington Saturday evening, so Sam Durrance made an appearance instead. Sam, however would not sign for anyone. I still had a good look around and took the new 'Nasa up close tour', It had many things that I had seen before but also showed some sites I had never seen. The remnants of the old Saturn V launch tower, now sitting in segments and rusting in a boneyard. (what a sin). When we were about to leave I enquired at the information desk about Story, and was told that he SHOULD be appearing the following day. (A bit of a long shot). The nice woman on the desk signed our tickets for
re-admission, if we chose to return. Before heading back to Orlando we made a detour and ate at the Moonhut, that so many members recommended. Thank you, nice meal with a few interesting pieces of space memorabilia. I did drag the family back to KSC the next day, only to be told that it was Sam appearing again (Murphy's law). However whilst sitting waiting for the 'astronaut encounter' to start, I spotted a baldhead entering through a secured door. It was indeed Story. I had a quick word with his minder/co-presenter and asked if he would sign, she said he would after his show. He was a great orator with lots of stories and anecdotes. I asked the questions: - 1) Having joined the astronaut Corp in 1968, before man had landed on the moon, and having to wait 13 years for a flight, did he ever think he wouldn't get into space. 2) How did his early training compare with that of the newer recruits? He seemed to appreciate that someone in the audience knew about his history and achievements, going on to explain that being in the airforce after the Korean war he wasn't really skilled for anything else and made the most of what he knew. He said that unlike the newer entrants, he had not set out to be a career astronaut, it just happened that way.
After the presentation had finished he sat and chatted with me and my family for about 15 minutes, signed my litho and admired my other WSS lithos, reminiscing about old colleagues.
Sorry this reply has been so long, but you did ask.
We did return to KSC for one last quick look at STS-104 sitting on pad 39A, on Wednesday 27th.

Hi Paul

Sounds like you had a great time. Sorry for not remembering that I've already wished you luck at KSC - memory like a sieve.

I've just discovered that we will miss a shuttle launch by two days!!!

Hi Everyone

Had a decent day on Saturday. Up at 7.00 am then drove down to the opening of The National Space centre in Leicester. Probably not that exciting for our US friends but for us in the UK its quite a big thing really.

First of all, the building is outstanding. With a tower to one side that is made of a PVC type stuff that is quilted with pressurised air inside. Each panel cost £15,000. Inside it are two rockets, not terribly big but were originally built for military use, basically I think they were missiles. Pretty good.

As you walk in there is a suspended Soyuz capsule above you that looks pretty worn out. This immediately made me think it had been in space but it was in fact made at the same time as the flown one and just not used. The panel next to it said it had been in an outside display in Georgia for 30 years.

Inside the building there is lots to see and do and the interior design is excellent, even down to the toilets that look pretty space age. Lots of interactive exhibits, computers and touch screen things that are pretty swish. Some of the exhibits are not actually finished yet but given time I think it will be excellent.

There is Helen Sharmans chair that launched her into space. A few big suits that made my day (Im very keen on EVA suits) that looked russian but there was no labelling. Also, there was a full size walk in mock up of one of the sections in the ISS. Couldn't resist the photo.

The dome screen show was pretty good too, lots of buttons on the arms (not functional yet) and the film was narrated by Richard Attenborough. Personally, I preferred the film I saw recently at the IMAX Printworks in Manchester 'Destination Space' or something, that was AWESOME! You actually felt like you were there on the shuttle looking down at the earth. It would have been better to have something like that I think.

Of course to set the day off on a good footing, you cant get any better than bumping into a shuttle astronaut. I just caught Jeff Hoffman before he zipped off and asked him to sign my book (and a dollar bill I had). I was very pleased. He wasn't very chatty but polite and agreed to sign my stuff. Decent chap.

So there you have it, hope I've not bored you all with my space tale.

Oh yeah, nearly forgot. There was a CND demonstration outside to stop George Bush and the 'Star Wars program' from going ahead. They were basically saying that it was non progressive exercise and is knocking us back 15 years.

I have to say, as much as I love the Exploration of space and the prospect of a possible mars Landing in the distant future. I dont feel there is any need to restart any Space Based Military programme.

Whats the point? Who's the threat? And what decade is he living in?

This combined with tearing up that Ecological treaty that took years to set up makes me worry about his state of mind.

My 2 pence worth anyway

Bye

Stevie
