General question -- Has anyone notice a difference in return rate with respect to current members of the astronaut corp. depending on whether you supply A SASE or not (presuming they have the easier access to the NASA 8x10 protrait)?

I personally find a much greater success rateusing a SASE. But as of late, the astro office is shutting down a lot of PR deals due to some serious budget cuts. I have some mail items there for quite a long time, and to astros who are excellent signers. It has been brought to my attention by a couple of astronauts, that there is a ton of mail to be distributed still. One of the reasons, is one of the girls in the office, Christine McDonough, had a death in the family that was quite traumatic, and she was off work for sometime.

Hello
I just received two autographed pictures from Dr. Tom Jones. He inscribed both in a silver paint pen. The turn around was two weeks. I sent an SASE. He was at space day at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum on May 3rd and was not autographing that day but he told me if I sent the pictures to him at JSC he would be glad to sign them.

I always send an SASE when I write to current astronauts. When I first started collecting in 1999, I would say 75% of my request came back in JSC envelopes and 25% in my SASE. For those who did not use my SASE, they almost always sent it back so I was able to use the stamps again.

As of late, it has been reversed. 75% come in my SASE and 25% in the JSC envelope. I also heard that it was due to budget cuts, as Al said above. Also, probably because I now live in Australia, that has something to do with it.

Two days ago, I got a signed 3x5 card back from Scott Horowitz, in my SASE.

Sounds alot like what I've been hearing from my buddy down JSC way. Budget cuts have messed things up as has a shake up in the top dogs too. I don't have any real hard facts at this time, so I can't comment. But it's a bunch of things that are having the affect we are seeing.
Take Care.
