Two years ago I purchased for the small sum of £40 (approx $30) two boxes full of every newspaper article there ever was of all the Apollo moon missions reported here in Great Britain. Because I had a very young baby at the time I never really had a good look at what was in the boxes. This evening I had a quick look and to my surprise I found an envelope full of lithos from NASA. The lithos included were: - 'Apollo 11 crew'
- 'Apollo 13 crew (with Mattingly)'
- 'Apollo 11 - Aldrin on the moon with Eagle in background'
- 'Eagle returning to Columbia over surface of the moon with Earth in the background'
- 'Aldrin standing by USA Flag'
- 'Famous picture of Aldrin on his own with Armstrong in visor'
- 'Apollo 11 - lift off - showing top part of Saturn V lifting off'
- 'President Nixon Greets Apollo 11 Crew on board the Carrier Hornet'
- 'Neil Armstrong photographs Aldrin's descent to the Lunar surface'
Some of these lithos do not have any information printed on the back and the texture of the print looks like linen Maybe these ones are not actual lithos. I'm not quite sure what they are, but they were sent to Great Britain from NASA in 1970.Thought I would share this find with you all. |

Isn't it always nice to receive a surprise? Is there any printing on the front? NASA lithos didn't always have printing on the rear. If you can describe the printing I may be able to explain a tad better. |

Yes, on the linen look lithos there is printing at the bottom of each image. The printing is in capitals and in black ink.Does that help with the identification? |

Yes, it certainly appears that many, if not all, of the 8x10 photographs are indeed original NASA lithograph issues from either MSC-Houston (now JSC) and NASA HQS in Washington, D.C. Most of the original prints included the NASA meatball logo on the back of each print along with a brief description... all in black ink. Most of the original issues also contained a caption on the bottom of each picture under the photo image but not in every case. Three of the pictures Jacqueline makes reference to are a bit unusual for NASA lithos that were released by the thousands from 1969 on; 1) The Eagle returning to Columbia, 2) The Apollo 11 liftoff view that she described, and 3) when Nixon greets the crew onboard the Hornet. If these contain no captions on back, but are indeed NASA lithos, those three fall into a special category of early-released pics that you don't see too often in this format, but they may contain another type of caption as a first-time early release, but later, discontinued by the space agency. |

I went looking thru my stuff and found what are probably the same lithos you described. There was a set, undoubtedly produced for the souvenir market, by Scarboro Publications and sold in a white envelope with the crew logo on the outside. The paper that was used for the printing does have a kind of linen texture. These are not NASA produced lithos, but nice collectibles nonetheless. |

Let me add more that perhaps I should have addressed before. Jacqueline, did you receive your pictures from NASA itself at Houston or NASA Headquarters? If they were in fact received inside a NASA mailing envelope container, which I assumed they were as you indicated, the photos referred to by Russ were never issued nor distributed by NASA itself. Some of the pics you made reference to appear similar to the packet set of eight pictures produced by Chuck Scarboro of Satellite Beach, FL, back in the late 1960s. Scarboro produced slightly more than 200,000 of the photo sets for Apollo 11 and produced similar eight photo packet sets commercially from Apollo 8 through ASTP; including a book entitled "Twenty Years of Space" and color 35mm slide sets for most of the manned Apollo missions. His souvenir-type printed photos were all 8 1/2 x 11-inch cuts (not the NASA-issued 8x10 prints) and did contain captions in black ink with all caps at the bottom of each pic -- but nothing was ever printed on the back surfaces of all the different pictures. This would be a good way to compare the photos you have, Jacqueline, but I also was trying to point out that NASA did indeed publish color lithos that you don't see too often right after Apollo 11's lunar voyage. One of the "different" lithos shows Aldrin on the moon saluting the flag with a caption at the bottom reading, "ASTRONAUT ALDRIN POSES WITH DEPLOYED FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES," but has no NASA meatball printed on back and contains a slightly different description writeup... and says "Photograph Courtesy of NASA all in caps with NASA written out. Another Apollo 11 litho similar to above is entitled at the bottom of the pic-image, "THE EARTH AS SEEN FROM FROM APOLLO 11, JULY 21, 1969" in which this particular NASA litho was discontinued in late 1969. And there were many lithos produced by NASA that contained no write-ups on back and some early prints from 1960 on that are seldom seem, but we know many were issued by the space agency for public release. In particular, I just came across a two-picture set depicting the MR-4 launch and Grissom on the phone to JFK after his splashdown in the Atlantic. I've only encountered this "set" 3-5 times in my collecting experience of more than 30+ years, but know NASA did in fact issue both color lithographs during the early 1960s, and apparently stopped releasing them either in late 1961 or early 1962. |

Thank you very much for the information. You certainly have hit the nail on the head with this one. The prints were in a white envelope with the crew's logo on. I had to abandon the envelope to the bin though as it was falling to bits. Maybe not lithos, but a wonderful set of prints. I bet there are not many people in the UK with this set. | |
