Over the years I have seen a variety of water facilities that NASA used for the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo eras to train astronauts in EVA and spacecraft egress procedures. But I am not clear on which facility is which. For example, during the Mercury era, there are photographs of a boilerplate Mercury vehicle submerged underwater and of each Mercury astronaut practicing spacecraft egress procedures underwater.
During the Gemini era, there are pictures of Buzz Aldrin training for his Gemini 12 spacewalk deeply submerged underwater with a mock-up of the Agena Docking Vehicle.
From 1966, there are photographs of a Block I Apollo boilerplate floating in an open air swimming pool that was used to train the Apollo 1 prime and back-up crews in spacecraft egress procedures. Also from 1966, there are photographs of different Apollo crews training in spacecraft egress procedures with a life raft in what appears to be an enclosed, indoor swimming pool.
And finally, there are photographs of the Skylab astronauts submerged deeply underwater in spacewalk training in what appears to be a neutral buoyancy tank, and presumably, this was the facility in Huntsville, Alabama.
So did NASA have multiple water-filled facilities on hand?
