Just had this Daily Mail article sent to me. It concerns Apollo 10 and their "restroom issues". Newly discovered transcripts from NASA’s Apollo 10 mission have revealed that the astronauts came across some unexpected (and unwanted) problems during the trip.The record of conversations from the 1969 Moon mission reveal that the spacemen had to tackle some tricky toilet-related issues. It suggests that Thomas Stafford, John Young and Eugene Cernan had not entirely got to grips with how to use the spacecraft’s bathroom facilities. |

Makes you realize exactly how glamorous spaceflight is. I'm sure there's lots of instances where astronauts performed unpleasant actions to keep everything as clean as possible. |

If anyone is curious why this is in the news now, when the transcript has been available for years, NBC News explains: Some reports have suggested that the transcript describing Apollo 10's "Close Encounters of the Turd Kind" was released just recently, but it's actually been declassified for decades. The 44-year-old conversation sparked a new round of giggles over the past week, due to its renewed exposure on The Straight Dope, Laughing Squid, Reddit and elsewhere. Apollo 10 wasn't the only flight where this was a problem, but the one that had the most publicity.And it wasn't just on Apollo where this happened. Bob Overmyer told me of one of his shuttle flights where the crew spent days breathing in a brown haze. In another thread I did suggest that if the general public had any real idea about the sanitary arrangements on a space mission that even the keenest might have second thoughts. On edit - according to Al Worden, the abiding memory of his flight was the sight of Dave Scott floating in front of him with a 'John Mk.2' taped to his backside. |
