As Charlie Duke's webmaster, we've started talking about the 40th anniversary of Apollo 16. I think it's fair to assume that we won't be hearing much, if anything, from Young and Mattingly when the anniversary rolls around. As you may have read in the Patches area, Walt Cunningham has had great success with a special reissue of the Apollo 7 patch [which had nothing to do with the 40th anniversary, btw] - but I'm curious what, if anything, the collectors might want to see or read from Charlie Duke? This is just a general spitballing question. Charlie and I have just been chatting recently about it.

Of course the perfect idea would be: a special print of a Hengeveld painting signed by Duke. |

I plan to watch a marathon of Sanford & Son, M*A*S*H* and All In The Family.(Because sadly, that's what the majority of Americans were doing then. I remember watching full coverage of the EVAs on European TV when I was living there as an 11 year old). |

I suggest commemorative Apollo 16 orange juice drink bag replicas, designed to leak and potassium-fortified for your enjoyment...(And for the record, I am only half-joking; I would buy one!) |

Good question on how to mark this flight. This was the first flight that the big three TV networks did not cover EVAs from hatch open to hatch closed. I would like to see a really good replica of the plaque that was attached to the LM leg. Placed on a proper display and signed in some form would be great. (Even better if Orion still ends up being the next generation spacecraft.) |

A commemorative patch would be a good idea. |

I agree with Fred that a replica of the plaque would be a good way to mark the event. Perhaps a 1/24 or 1/12 scale LM leg with the porch, ladder and the plaque on a suitable base. |

On a serious note, I would agree with the plaque idea.On a not so serious note, I think Charlie should come over to my house for a day and hang out to celebrate the anniversary. I could bake a cake or something and we could watch the Spacecraft Films Apollo 16 DVD together. |

I agree with Robert's idea about the juice bag, but make it a whoopee cushion! |

I'd like to see a 40th anniversary print featuring Duke or the entire crew which includes various photos from the Apollo 16 mission that could then be autographed. Also, how about we cS members submit questions and then let the youngest Moonwalker answer his favorite Top Ten (or more) here on cS? |

Well, if it were just to do with Charlie, I'd vote for anything that's inscribed with, "look at the size of that rock!" ...or perhaps a limited printing of one of Beano's paintings, such as "Charlie Duke at Maximum Moonspeed". However, it's important to highlight the whole mission and the entire crew. What I think might be nice would be a limited edition, moderately-sized framed piece, featuring a piece of art and a patch or medallion. If done correctly, it could be a beautiful collectible. Although I do like the idea of a mini replica of the plaque from the LM. |

In keeping with Robert's suggestion I was reminded of tacky souvenirs to be found in Scotland. Small tins containing "Scotch mist"; yes, such things do exist.Perhaps we could do something similar for the Apollo 16 anniversary; you can imagine the kind of captured mist I have in mind.....Phew! |

I sure wish we could talk Ken Mattingly into doing a mail-in charity signing somewhere. |

Jonathan, wouldn't it be grand if Gen Duke could coax Adm Mattingly into doing a charity-signing event? One can always dream, "AIM HIGH!"

I don't know if Charlie would approve, but I would love to see not so much a patch but some "nose art" dedicated to Apollo 16 with a nymphet stepping onto the lunar surface, commemorating that "Sweet 16 has arrived!". |

Oh come on - surely it wasn't that offensive? I thought it would be a neat idea... 8-) |

Heck, I'd pay $500.00 just to hear Young and Duke read the transcripts about their OJ "experiences"!

Perhaps a diorama/model of the LRV on Descartes with Young on board popping a wheelie, and Duke waving a checkered flag, to commemorate the first Lunar 500 at the end of the third EVA? I'm sure NASCAR fans would adore this collectible too! |

I'm not very good at this, and I had more in mind a WWII nose art type of design, but I thought of something like this: |

I'd buy a sweet sixteen patch. To commemorate Charlie's "Rats", how about 'Rats on a Stick' the recipe for which may be found in Nanny Ogg's Cook Book.* * If you mail me I'll be happy to send you the recipe. Kids of all ages will love them especially with Halloween approaching. |

Before you all get to carried away with any "Sweet 16" theme you may want to learn a little bit about just who Charlie Duke is. I would suggest a trip to this part of his web site.Scroll to the bottom and watch the three part video "Walk with The Son". |

Ah, how quickly they forget to account for the military pilot mentality... From Bonham's 2009 catalog: The cuff checklist used by Lunar Module Pilot Charles Duke, Jr. was exposed directly to the lunar environment for over 12 hours during those exploration periods... The crew of Apollo 16 found a special drawing on the next leaf. It features a drooling space-suited astronaut melting away in the arms of a buxom nude woman. The astronaut says: "Happy Birthday Whatever Your Name Is." Bottom Line: One can be a pious man and still retain an appreciation for the hotties. |

You will need to view the video. Bottom line is he is not the same man now as he was then and as a second note you may want to throttle back out of respect to Dottie. |

Are you suggesting that the wives of these fighter pilots did not realize that their husbands used some "extracurricular" stuff with each other to keep things interesting? And, I have viewed his video... and I have read the book he and Dottie wrote. Neither of them have tried to re-write the realities of those days. They simply place them in context, and then move on with their lives. That was then, this is now. If he were to design a patch for "Sweet 16" today, it would look quite different, but in the 60's he and his crewmates might very well have opted for something like this as an un-official version. I have nothing but the utmost respect for Dottie and for all the spouses. I suspect, if she saw the patch, she would probably roll her eyes knowingly and that's about it. Gen. Duke might not think that the patch is in keeping with the dignity of the 40th anniversary event, of course, but I would be truly stunned if he were offended by it. |

Since the only person who can say for certain what Charlie Duke finds in good taste is Charlie Duke, debating what his reaction might be seems counterproductive.I'd say now that the 'Sweet 16' patch has been suggested, let's move on to other ideas for marking the 40th anniversary of Apollo 16... |

I take onboard what you are saying, and I agree to a large extent. As I said, the patch is not quite what I had in mind. It was meant to try and demonstrate the concept, not the content.I think one could be done, similar to what I have suggested but in the more traditional 'nose art' of WWII vintage, which can still have the light-hearted risque feel but meet Charlie's standard of approval. |

One idea might be a philatelic item like an Event Cover for Apollo 16 with the KSC cancel. Here is one Event Cover I did for the 40th Anniversary of Apollo 11.Chris www.callespaceart.com |

Had an e-mail from Charlie (who is in Switzerland right now). He asked me to tell everyone that he's working on "something" right now for the 40th anniversary (but would not elaborate)... and also, for those of you who may have ordered anything through his website lately, he's running about a month behind on shipments because of his travel schedule. |

A limited edition patch would be great, or perhaps, a photo from Duke's personal collection of the mission or crew training as an 8X10 limited edition would be unique. |

I would like to suggest a huge wall poster of high-resolution Apollo 16 images including the patch, crew and a large selection of the best EVA photos taken at Descartes. |
