No, I'm not talking that kind of moonshine and have not even been drinking but...A vintage NASA lithograph (identified as AP-907) of the famous Apollo 8 Earth Rise has recently sold on ApolloMissionPhotos.com. This photo is interesting in that the nightside of the earth is apparently bathed in moonshine or "ashen glow". This all makes for a rather dramatic, almost 3-dimensional, view the likes of which I have never seen in any other Apollo earth rise photograph (Apollo 8 or otherwise). This photo stands in sharp contrast to the first images of this same scene as presented on the Apollo Flight Journal and numerous other locations on the web. I see no evidence of moonshine in any of these other photos. Any thoughts on this? Does anyone have a link to a high-res scan of AP-907? |

That shot has been doctored with Photoshop - that's why you don't see it like that elsewhere. |

I'm well aware that the fine folks in the photo department at NASA have utilized their artistic license on more than one occasion (Apollo 8 launch as seen in KSC-68PC-329 comes to mind with it's impossible crescent moon). However, it amazes me why anyone would feel the need to doctor up such a classic image as the Apollo 8 earth rise. I still would like to see a hi-res version of AP-907 if anyone has one. |

The particular 16x20 lithograph of Earth rise now in question was part of a NASA set of commemorative Apollo 11 prints. |

The Apollo 8 shot is a multiple exposure. I would definitely agree that the one on the first site has been doctored. |

Ben, if you are referring to KSC-68PC-329 as being a multiple exposure, it is more than a simple double exposure seeing that the crescent moon is upside-down. Creative, yes. Realistic, no. Whoever did this has no concept of lunar phases as seen from the surface of the earth. |

Most likely the camera was just turned a bit to place it as desired. But I would describe it as a simple double exposure.Realistic? No, it isn't. Neither is this. |

Regarding AP-907, the mystery of the doctored Apollo 8 photo is easily solved - it's from Apollo 10. A quick look at the Apollo Image Atlas shows that it is an enlargement taken from one of the photos between AS10-27-3888 and S10-27-3897. |

Good eye, Matt! The mystery still remains. Is AP-907 labeled as Apollo 8 on the back of the photo? Why did they add the moonshine? I do feel better now. At least they did not tamper with the Apollo 8 Earth Rise. |
