Through the courtesy of Wally Schirra, NASA MSFC, James Bilbrey and Ed Buckbee, an oral and video history about Wally Schirra titled "Skyray" was produced shortly after the RTF of Discovery this summer. The movie is about 25 minutes long and can be found on Wally's site at http://www.wallyschirra.com and clicking on the "Skyray-The Movie" link. I've also added a few more photos of Wally to his home page and to the movie page site [more to come shortly] for your enjoyment.Feedback on the movie would be greatly appreciated. It's in flash format and should stream automagically, so, it should be viewable in all browsers. The file size is about 25mb, so if you still have a 350 baud acoustic modem, it may take a couple of minutes to load. Enjoy it. I'll pass any comments on to the powers that be. Cheerz! Tracy

Out of what I'm sure will be purely academic interest, how long to download via dial-up on a Windows 95 computer? |

I have no idea. I know of someone who streams using Windows 98 on a dial up in Sweden and it ran perfectly |

I must admit, the film is 100% typical Wally. If you've never had the honor of meeting and chatting wtih him, this is his typical story-telling way.

Ed Buckbee, James Bilbrey, the gang from NASA MSFC and Wally really did a great job. I can only imagine what was left on the cutting room floor.I'm forwarding all of your comments to Wally, Ed, etc. It you have soemthing to say, please do. James from MSFC really sent me a nice note saying that he produces these films and that they're only viewed once or twice. This one will be out there for eternity and he's very proud of it. -tracy

Divemaster,I have a creative friend who taught high school physics for a while. He liked to dress up like famous people and give lectures to inspire the kids. One of my favorites is his impersonation of Lt. Commander Wally Hurrah (aka Wally Schirra). He dressed up in a flight suit, got a dolly with wheels and a bunch of fire extniguishers in the school gym, and taught the kids about thrust, etc. Wally would have probably enjoyed the show. Great movie by Wally and friends! |

Are you sure he wasn't the "real deal"? |

I also found that Wally's comment about the movie "The Right Stuff" should have been a comedy starring Belushi and Ackroyd to be quite a telling comment about his feelings towards the way the Grissom/hatch incident was handled. I never quite looked at it that way. He made it a point to say that he enjoyed the book, but didn't care too much about the movie.I've been forwarding the various comments that you all have made here and in e-mail to Wally and Ed Buckbee. They have both been quite intrigued with everyones comments. Ed said that he's going to send me a disc of out takes. Those should be a lot of fun, too. |

Enjoyed the movie very much. Wally was a real pleasure to meet at the N.J. show. I wrote a poem about him which he signed:A veteran of flight, steadfast and tough. A chosen man who had the right stuff. From Sigma 7 to 6 Gemini, a mastery of Apollo to honor those who died. From '69 to '72 those who flew were numbered few. And for those who stirred the dust, you led the way and gained their trust. So when the "gods" gathered, to give their hurrah, "who brought us the moon", they declared "Wally Schirra" Vince Lawrence

I had a lot of fun meeting Capt. Schirra in July and he was as interesting as I had hoped. He drove over to Solana Beach and met us at the hotel we were staying at (and set up to do the interview at...) and arrived driving a 12 cylinder Jaguar. When he got out of the car my producer asked him..."do you fly any these days?" and he points to his car and says "Only in that..." At that point I knew we were going to have a good time. We talked to him for almost 2 hours and we finally had to let him go because his wife was going to have lunch ready at home. Luckily the guy behind the hotel counter was able to take a pretty good picture of the two of us before he had to head home... http://community.webshots.com/photo/259401552/416048652nXvKsT James Marshall TV
