Suppose Deke Slayton got hit by a high-speed bus, and while he was recovering you had ABSOLUTE DISCRETION over crew selection. Deke is fine, but laid up, but when he comes back in 6 months your choices are set in stone.(And I know there's another thread "Deke For A Day" but this is about non-astronaut crews and made-up stuff) Personally, I was a hippie. Not a beads-and-flowers hippie, but a wiseguy hippie. Of course, I was up to the usual counterculture meshugas. Under the influence of same I'd send a crew with Lee Marvin(CDR), Dick Butkus (CMP) and Slim Pickens (LMP). Their backups would be Bruno Sammartino, Bob Cousey and Jack Nicholson. I assume I can have the Way-Back Machine correct their ages:CDR: Charles Lindbergh LMP: Carl Sagan (who else?) CMP: Ernest Shackleton (he'd get them home no matter what) backup crew: CDR: Orville Wright (that'd be a hoot) LMP: Richard Leakey (just in case there might be a fossil record near the surface) CMP: Me, of course... BTW, your backup crew REALLY needs Gorilla Monsoon and Klondike Bill.... Hey Duke - fun thread! I looked at your nomination of Marlon Brando, and thought what a great Gemini crew he and Tom Stafford would have made. Imagine the person tasked with trying to transcribe the mission dialogue!! ("What the HELL did he say? And what the heck did HE say?") Colin |

As my Dad likes to say, "I was told if I voted for Barry Goldwater, we'd be at war in six months. I did. And we were."

Well, he wasn't EXACTLY the extension agent. He was more like an advisor. Actually, it was more as if he was looking over your shoulder. Not your shoulder so much as the back of your neck. Well, maybe not your neck....... (Does anyone remember him from "The Wild One"?) [This message has been edited by Duke Of URL (edited August 22, 2005).] |
