Hi,
I'm new here. This is such a great forum and I've learned so much stuff about the M-G-A programs that I did not previously know. One of my main references is David Baker's book: The History of Manned Spaceflight. (1986 Ed), another is David Reynolds': Apollo, The Epic Journey to the Moon. I highly recommend both. I also have many of the books authored by the astronauts themselves.

I would like to learn more about the so-called 500F 'facilities' Saturn V . Was building this always planned? How much of it was 'working' hardware and how much was dummy? Were the parts built by the same contractors that made the 'live' Saturn V hardware? How long was the 500F on the pad? Which pad - 39A or 39B - was it on? Where is it, or its pieces, now?

Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul and welcome to collectSPACE! I'll let others tackle some of your other questions, but as for your last...

The 500F Saturn V is located at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. It is currently undergoing a restoration, which you can watch live.

The USSRC has a website dedicated to the restoration and the rocket at:

Actually only the second stage at Huntsville is from the Facilities checkout vehicle.

The first stage was built at Michoud and had 4 mass dummy engines and a mock-up engine (FM-105).

The second stage was built by North American Aviation at Seal Beach and was subsequently used as the Dynamic test vehicle.

The third stage was built by Douglas at Huntington Beach. It was later converted to become the Skylab OWS dynamic test vehicle.

The 500F was primarily used for interface and propellant loading tests on the pad.

The complete story of the 500F can be found in the new Apogee book, Saturn.

To answer some of Paul's specific questions, the 500F was rolled out to pad 39A on 25 May 1966. It returned to the VAB on 8 June for 2 days because of the threat of Hurricane Alma. It finally returned to the VAB on 14 October 1966 after the completion of all tests.

Mr. Lawrie,
Thank you very much for your replies. I am going to order your book, however Amazon has stated a delivery of early September (probably due to the very recent release). I look forward very much to reading it.

Thanks again,
Paul
