I was fortunate to visit KSC last month. Does anyone know what material was used to make the moonwalker boots? They have a light gray/blue color I noticed. Tahir |

The overshoes that slipped over the Apollo intervehicular pressure boots (IVA) for Lunar EVA consisted of metal-woven fabric (Chromel R) and Teflon-coated Beta cloth, with ribbed silicone rubber soles. BTW, the boots you saw at KSC were replicas. The overshoes that Armstrong (and Aldrin) wore on the surface remained on the Moon. |

I've one of the original Apollo development lunar boots which the suit engineers were testing and examining after trials immediately prior to the lunar landing flights.I have an image of it ( which I've now got trace so give me a day or so !) - and I'll email you an image of it. One thing I did notice when I first received it was that the whole boot would have rustled - if there had been sound on the Moon. This is because of the many differing 'metallic and comfort layers' in the boot. Phill UK

well - it worked !There is an outer thermal meteoroid garment beta fabric layer that goes over the top (not shown) which I also have. Not readily seen in the image are the very many layers that make up this boot. There are many alternating layers. I think - if I remember right [but need lookup again] - that the 'gold' looking band was for anti-static electricity reasons? As I said before, this boot really rustles when you handle it - bit like the cellophane wrappings on chocolate sweets . OOh,chocolate as Homer would say! This boot has been displayed a couple of times in UK exhibitions Phill UK |
