I have returned from years of cryo sleep in the cS boards. Much has changed, good and bad, and it is time to part with some of the items that have been with me for years.

Some of it includes: Apollo 16 surface flown USA flag signed and authenticated by Charlie Duke, Apollo 9 flown Texas flag from the McDivitt collection, STS-2 through 4 flown USA flags, Armstrong signed photo from one of the few signings he did, full set of KNIGA Vostok covers, Apollo 11 crew signed faded photo, just to name a few.

Why am I here saying this? Because I need to know if any of you have done a mass sale of items like this, and if so, did you go through an auction house?

Please comment any advice you could give me. Thanks again!!

I sold a large quantity of my own collection back in 2013. I considered the auction route but felt that as the majority of my items were high-end spacesuit related I could probably reach enough buyers through cS to get good prices. I posted a thread, which I updated periodically, showing the items I was planning on selling, and inviting interested buyers to email me. After a couple of weeks I had an email list of several dozen people, and each evening I emailed out a selection of items for sale with an opening bid, and an increment e.g. an Apollo meal pouch, opening $300, increment $25, and gave interested parties 24 hours to bid. If a bid was received the item was extended a further 24 hours and the new price updated on the following evening's email. I'd email the high bidder to let them know they were in the lead.

Downsides - I only hit cS members and some spacesuit collectors that I already knew. It was a time-consuming job for a few weeks while I was photographing, digging out research about the background/use of hardware, and writing descriptions. Once that stage was done it dropped to an hour or two of reading emails, working out the top bids and then writing the update each night.

Upsides - I saved 20+% commission and the buyers were able to bid without allowing for the extra 20 to 30% commission that they would be charged; this may likely have increased the amounts bid. I had a LOT of fun doing it, and I think many of the buyers did too, though necessarily some were dissappointed not to win items.

I've since sold some items through one of the big prestige auction houses that sporadically carry space sales. The amount of research and prep I had to do was identical, the prices were not transformatively different; however once I'd shipped the items off my workload was approaching zero, and I was offered a good deal on commission.

Hope that helps.

I sold several of my favorite items using Heritage Auctions. This provided an easy route as they do all the photos, etc., but charge for these services.

Like any auction, all it takes is two people who want something to realize higher prices. Something I thought worth little sold for 10 times that amount; something I thought worth a lot sold for one-third that amount. Good luck whatever you choose.

I recommend picking out some items (maybe 5-10, depending on exactly how much time you want to spend) for which you can find past auction sales of virtually identical items. Then post them for sale here and on a couple of other online places at prices a little under those sale prices. (Since you'll still end up with a little more by avoiding auction fees.)

Then, for the rest (and unsold ones), as others have said, send a list to an auction house to see what they'll take. RR and Heritage are well-regarded and have space sales at least twice a year.

All times are CT (US)
