I am hoping someone can help me. I have a retired space worker who wants to sell his missile mail and rocket mail covers from the early 1960's in our charity auctions. As this is way out of my field of knowledge I am hoping someone can help with scarcity and value of the covers below.Any information is appreciated and there are a few more I will add later.

From what I can see, Chuck, there are some interesting missile/rocket mail covers and souvenir stamp sheets, however, most appear to be modern-day type cover issues from the 1960's onward (all except one). The more valuable rocket mail covers go back the last three decades before 1960. Many of the earlier flown covers originated from well-known rocket pioneers of that pioneering rocket age era, especially from Germany and other European nations, and even the U.S. in some cases. I did note that a few were issued by the Rocket Research Institute of CA, which by the way, my firm assisted with that institute in creating some special rocket mail covers in commemorating major U.S. space feats of the 1970/80's. Next time we get together, Chuck, I'll be glad to go over them with you and there are even world-wide published rocket mail catalogs (such as Ellington-Zwisler) available with estimated values included. |

I looked these up in my copies of Ellington-Zwisler (published in 1967): - Top - EZ #43C1, 2000 made, est'd value $6.00
- Next down - EZ #43A1a, no qty listed, ev $5.00
- Middle left - EZ #32C2a, 1000 made, ev $6.00
- Middle right - EZ #39C2a, 400 made, ev $5.00
- Lower left - EZ #30C2, 1600 made, ev $8.00
- Lower right - EZ #26D1, not flown (postmarked 1 month after the flight), 1600 made, ev $15.00
Remember, these are 1967 era estimated values. Not sure if/how to inflate these to today's values. |

That is funny as he purchased most of these covers in the late 1950's and 1960's. He has about 3,000 covers ranging from 1923 to about 30 shuttle covers and everything in between. Many I have never seen after collecting covers for 20 years, including zeppelin, first flights, Wright brothers, Earhart, Charles Lindbergh flown postal covers as well as hundreds of rare space covers. He has a USS Champlain MR-3 (real) as well as recovery for all the Mercury flights, Concord crew signed flights including the first flight and first crossing, and way to much to list here but they will be all coming to auction soon. | |
