This gent is offering "signed" XB-70 covers on eBay. Actually these were "signed" by the cover servicers. This was a common practice back then and fooled a lot of us. Anyone familiar with Joe Cotton signatures can tell right away the difference (there are at least two tells which I don't want to publicize). I contacted him and got the run around of course — even sending him images of authentic signatures to no avail. Then of course he "sent them to a well know cover dealer who authenticated them." When I asked who the dealer was so I could educate him, his response was: "Not to be difficult but I cannot get into using their names, could raise all kinds of problems that I would not want to get into. As said, I will check into them again and use your image also." Yep, uh huh. They're still up. So anytime you see "signed" XB-70 covers, be very wary. This happened on X-15 covers as well. |

What the guy says after he's been sent an authentically signed cover for comparison: I did corroborate them against covers on a major space cover dealers site when listed. So no they weren't listed irresponsibly. I will check them again against known copies of their signatures. If you had provided any comparisons it would have been better than just an email out out of the blue with no information as to it is veracity. |

He sent me the same response originally Juergen. I did send some examples — and he continued to blow me off. I see he did modify the description, but didn't say anything about not autographed either. quote: Originally posted by yeknom-ecaps: Yes Al, it has fooled a lot of collectors and dealers!
Man it surely has! And the bad part is the cover servicer's signature was close to White and Cotton! |
