Just wondering if anyone had any information on this John Young autopen style (incuded with eBay lot 222512475657). I checked it against the known autopen examples but couldn't seem to match it with any of the shuttle-era autopens. The Crippen signature below is a clear match with his autopen example, but the Young signature is throwing me for a loop. Anyone have any insight? Thanks! |

Young looks good to me (just my opinion), but the Crippen is autopen. Do you know anything about the background or provenance of the signatures? |

Unfortunately I don't. It was mixed in with some other first day covers, most of which from Thiokol. The other covers are from notable STS events like the static test, first flight, second flight, etc. There were other mission and MFA stickers which leads me to speculate it was from the estate of a NASA or Thiokol employee. However, I was stumped because the Young does look good, but to be sitting right above a Crippen autopen made me wonder. I haven't seen many complete crew signatures with authentic/autopen mixes. Has anyone seen this before, particularly with STS-1? Thanks again!! |

Covers with mixed signatures like that aren't, from what I've seen, uncommon (just in general). I've never paid enough attention to STS-1 items to know specifically about this particular crew though. In general, it would just come down to how that request was handled by the specific astronaut — there wasn't necessarily a thought of "[X] physically signed this, so [Y] should too." A lot of factors played a role, including luck, and each signer was essentially treated as an individual rather than part of a whole. I do find it funny, on the basis of current reputation alone, that it's the Young that is the authentic of the two. |

Mixed authentic and autopen signed items are unfortunately very common (though in this case its usually the other way around). It's always a little sad to see a crew signed item signed authentically by all but one autopen. I generally have no interest in such items as despite the authenticity of some or most signatures, the piece will always have a caveat attached to it. | |
