I have been trying to finish my prime recovery ship cover set, and was offered this one for Schirra's MA-8 flight. I'm not sure what to make of the cancel, though. Is this a very atypical/over-inked rubber stamped 3? Is this a 3 struck over top of a 2? Is it backdated from a 5 or 8 to look like a 3? Any other cS members run across a handcancel like this? Other ideas? |

Too dubious - looks altered, since the upper half of the 3 'outweighs' the lower half - in contrast to the other 3s in the circumference printing. |

I must disagree. It looks like an over-inked 3 to me. I've compared the postmark to several I have and its characteristics are the same, except for the over-inking. The 3 is always significantly different to the 3s in CVS-33. If you look closely at the end of the upper and lower legs of the 3, they end in a slight 'ball' which is quite typical of this postmark. Every other element appears to line up correctly with my examples. Therefore looks OK to me. |

I compared this to the examples in Ball's Astrophilately and did see that the 3 is supposed to look quite different on the date vs. the CVS-33. However, in all of his examples, there is a definite break between the lobes and center of the 3. In this example, it looks like the 3 is on top of some other digit. If it's a 2, then I guess that's OK (oops, forgot to change the slug first thing in the AM), but if it's a 5 or 8, then it seems to me this is a backdated cover and not what I'm looking for. I'd be interested in any other examples or opinions about ships with overstruck dates. | |
