Look for insight on this part.Seller claims it was attached to shuttle airframe and thermal tiles attached to it, and from Charles Bell. |

I have a similar part in my collection — This segment of Inconel-covered cerachrome insulation once was bolted to a flange on a reinforced carbon-carbon (RCC) component of the shuttle's leading edge structure and was attached to an aluminum wing spar. It protected the metallic fittings and spar from the heat radiated during reentry from the inside surface of the RCC wing panels. You can see where pieces like this fit in these photos: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |

In my opinion these are not that rare, you see them in auctions frequently, and I think the price on this is too high. About half might be right. |

Here's a relevant graphic.Similar insulation was used not only on the wing leading edges, but in the main engines, vertical stabilizers, APU ducts, RCS thrusters, and elevons. This particular one looks like it might be from a wing leading edge. I see the part number is VO70-199627-001. What I'm wondering though... The seller indicates he would ship international, but would this be ITAR restricted since afterall, it is insulation designed for rockets and missiles? |

Yes, it cannot be exported without a waiver from the State Department. |

I sent a request asking for shipping to my location; also an aside stating it may be restricted on export as part of the Shuttle. I'll send a copy of this thread to the owner as well. Thanks everyone. |
