Hello, I'm new to the site. My name is Bert Pasquale, and I took extensive photos of the last shuttle flight (STS-135). I got a few of my prints signed by the astronauts (way cool!), and I'm wondering what people's experience is in seeing prints for sale with signatures reproduced on them. - Is it legal, ethical, other pros/cons. Thanks in advance for any insight!

So long as they were advertised as non-authentic signatures (e.g., "the signatures are a part of the photo), there's nothing wrong with that.

But I could see a problem in the future with people thinking they have an authentic STS-135 signed photo and it's not - letters get misplaced, lost, or thrown away, stickers get removed or covered up, writing on the back gets removed or covered up.

There's already a concern over signed photos coming from NASA in which the "autographs" are difficult to determine that they're not real.

Thanks Hart, that's very helpful.

I could alleviate the concern somewhat by printing a note on the very edge "Limited Edition Reproduction #/X" Since I include the "LifeStoryImages.com" logo down in the bottom, it would be easy for someone to research and discover that there is only one signed original of each on my prints.

The other part of my question is the etiquette of doing it. Do astronauts, as civil servants, have no problem with their signatures being reproduced? i.e., is that par for the course? I would not want to offend.

One would have to ask them, of course, but one could argue that they have no problem seeing as how they provide a signature to be used for the autopen machine... or one could argue that they have no argument, since their signature would be part of an artwork (did Warhol ask Campbell's for permission to use their logo?)

Why would they? Whenever a letter that I have signed is being photocopied, my signature is being reproduced.

Now whether anyone would be interested in buying such a xerox, is an entirely different question, but is that unethical as long as one is being honest about the nature of the paper sheet in question?
