Does anyone have an opinion on eBay #200636648182 - Apollo 17 Crew Signed Photo - $550? There is no description of the item. Are the signatures genuine? Thanks. |

They look like autopens to me. |

What would be the value of 3 such autopens? Also, does an autopen sign the exact same way each time and are they still being used today? Thanks. |

Yes, autopens are still used today. The placement and (in numerous instances, the patterns) of the "signatures" can vary. |

In case LM1 is asking whether the Apollo 17 crew autopens are still used, the answer for Cernan and Schmitt is "probably not." The answer for Evans is definitely not, as autopen patterns are retired when the astronaut passes away. |

In regard to the Apollo 17 crew signed photo, if all 3 are autopens, what would be the value of the photo? The seller is asking for $550. If this particular crew photo frequently autopenned? |

Yup, autopens -- worth anywhere from a few bucks to maybe $35 or so. |

This Apollo 17 signed crew photo is still on eBay and has 18 days remaining. He (Bill's Bargain Stamps of NJ) has only a closeup of the photo and no description. This is only 1 of 23,749 lots in his eBay store, including several crew-signed photos. His Apollo 16 and 17 crew signed photos are priced at $750 each. He has many one-of-a-kind items at high asking prices. There is an Armstrong signed photo for $3,250.There are at least two other Apollo 17 crew signed photos on eBay, but both are priced below $10 and they are each labeled as either autopens or reproductions and they each have closeups of each signature allowing the buyer to decide on their authenticity. Is there any way that we can warn a potential buyer of the $550 autopenned Apollo 17 photo, or is it a matter of "Buyer Beware!"? |

The Apollo 17 crew signed photo, which has been determined to be autopens, is still on eBay for two more days listed at $550. Should I make an offer of $10 or ask the seller a question about these autopen signatures? There is another similar crew signed photo on eBay, but it is stated to be a reproduction and is inscribed and valued at $8.99. The reason why I started this thread is that I recently acquired a similar Apollo 17 crew signed photo. I had a "start the car" moment at a local thrift shop. I found a framed Apollo 17 crew signed photo for $4.99. I considered for a moment that they may be forgeries or a reproduction, but they looked good and the photo is a NASA card stock photo. However, the signatures do not reflect light and cannot be felt on the back of the photo. If they are autopens, I am still happy because the photo would still be worth $20-$25. I plan to enter the photo on eBay this week. Here are the links to the photo and each signature. What is your opinion - autopens or genuine? |
