Can anyone tell me the amounts involved that would incur these duties when buying into the U.K. please? |

VAT is payable on most non-EU imports with a value above £18 at the same rate as for UK products or services. Customs duty becomes payable if the value of the goods is over £135. Not all items are stopped by Royal Mail for inspection although Fedex seem to be checking stuff more often. You can often get the VAT rate reduced to 5% if the item is classified as a historical collectible but you need to go through an appeal process. I've commented on this on cS before. Oh, and don't forget the outrageous Royal Mail charge for opening your package and inspecting it. You can't recover that. |

It's worth noting that there's no VAT or import duty on books posted to the UK. The only problem I've had with books is from one US Museum - and someone else had the same problem, so it may be the way they label them. |

On items shipped to the UK via roadfreight/seafrieght/airfreight:You will have to pay import duty on items with a value of £18 or above (including shipping). If sent via courier/airmail/postal services the you will pay import duty on a value of £135 or greater (including shipping). Worth knowing is that items declared as "Gift" trigger import duty if they have a value of £40 and above. If I recall correctly the inspection fee for the Royal Mail (or parcelforce) is around £11. |
