I have an STS-6 flown flag and mission patch that was awarded to me. I am thinking about selling, I was wondering if anyone knows any history on price? |

You should do a search for similar items on eBay using their "completed listings" filter. I think you'll find similar items sold for $300 - $400 depending on the quality of the frame and presentation.Good luck. On edit - I did the search. An STS-1 flown flag presentation sold for $464, STS-2 for $382, STS-32 $299. |

I agree that price can depend from item to item. I recently paid $500 for a flown Betsy Ross Flag and Patch from STS-51D and it was also signed by the late David Griggs. I also purchased for $400 a couple of months ago from another Collectspace member a flown STS-41C flag and patch from Challenger. |

I looked on eBay but found no flown flag or patch from STS-6 (maiden flight of Challenger). The flag and patch are attached to the certificate of recognition. Actually I cant find a single image of the patch anywhere on the internet. |

Is it the TDRSS patch, the Tracking and Data Relay Satelite System patch? It also says "NASA Communications for Space". I have a flown presentation piece with this patch and the U.S. flag. My presentation was given to Gene Kranz. You may have heard of him? It is an STS-6 presentation piece. |

Yes, that is exactly what it is, this was given to me for my work on payload safety for STS-6. I worked in S.R. and Q.A./systems safety for most of my time at NASA, but in the early years I worked in flight ops and sat at the radiation console. Gene was my boss. |

After Hurricane Rita, Gene decided to sell some of his memorabilia to benefit a church building project in his town. He sold those items through FarthestReaches.com and I was able to purchase his STS-6 presentation. It is a great piece. I am thankful to have it. Here is a picture of it. Is this what your patch looks like? |

A piece that was given to Gene Kranz will of course command a little more in value just because of who he is. |

Agreed. I feel I could sell it now for twice what I paid for it, but I have no desire to do that. I was not wanting to take over this thread as far as a price goes, I just wanted to show Lem5 what this patch looked like in case it was the same as his. |

I helped Paul Weitz market some, that he had a matte presentation made of. It had a 5x7 picture of the orbiter, and a flag or mission patch that was flown. It also had a cut out where he signed it was from his personal collection and flown on STS-6 (they're all gone, by the way). These were sold for $400. |

I appreciate all the input, I just saw the picture MD, not only is it the same patch, it is the exact certificate of recognition. |

Maybe there are not too many of these certificates out there then. Maybe just the VIPs? |

Yes, I believe this particular presentation was only given to a select few that made a significant contribution to the flight (as I recall), I was in charge of payload safety on STS-6 and was eventually assigned the duties of systems safety manager. I may be wrong, as old age has affected my memory. Maybe someone else would know more. |

For what it's worth, some collectors (and perhaps posterity as well) would appreciate having a picture and maybe some biographical information on the NASA employee to whom the award was originally presented. These things help with the provenance, but they also make the piece more interesting since it can be tied in a more concrete way to the individual who won the award. You might consider offering a photo and a short biographical write-up to the buyer (or auction winner) if they so desire. |

That wouldn't be a problem since it was awarded to me. I guess I just never thought of it/me in those terms. Thank you for your advise. |

Does your STS-6 piece have the patch in the center of four photos and the flag off to the side with a certificate? I have one and can take a photo this evening to compare |

Lem5 can you tell us about your work on payload safety? Maybe this would be appropriate for another thread. Thank you. |

MrSpace, it is the exact same presentation that mdmyer posted a picture of, in a previous post on this thread. Just replace the name with mine. |

Oh okay. That's a really neat presentation. Mine is totally different than yours though. My opinion is that yours probably ranges in the $400-$500 range. First flight if Challenger plus a patch makes a really neat and valuable presentation in my opinion. |

Well, this flown STS-53 flag, patch and foil was won on eBay for $177.50. Not a bad deal if you ask me when talking about flown material. |

I had some reservations about the STS-53 presentation. To my eyes, it looks like a homegrown put together presentation. Not one that was officially assembled by NASA, based on past examples. Why is there a Kapton piece and what role did it play on this shuttle mission? The presentation does not indicate why it is included.I also did not care for the verbiage: "These items were flown". Usually, it is spelled out "This flag and patch...". Too many warning signs, if you were to ask me. |
