Through some research and asking the seller, I found out he was a VP for the National Space Club (NSC) in the mid-'70's and was in the position to acquire these medallions. I asked him if the medallions contained any of the metal from the Apollo VIII, Apollo XI, Skylab, or Apollo Soyuz MFA medallions, but he didn't say (aside: he also said that the Skylab medallion that he had up for auction, which the NSC commissioned for 1,000 attendees looks like the MFA medallion, but he's pretty sure the NSC mintage is separate than the MFA one).
For the first auction, I thought I had bid high enough to beat anyone else's more reasonable bids, but I wasn't the only one to think that way.
I then was offered a second-chance, and after a lot of pondering, I decided to take it. Anyway, I thought the medallion was at least well-made (with shiny AND frosted surfaces), and I figure that the NSC had the resources/contacts to create a medallion with some 'flown' material.
