I'm constantly browsing the usual online stores that sell astronaut autographed photos, and I can't seem to understand why those stores are selling their Bruce McCandless photos for nearly twice the amount he charges at shows. I understand the 16x20" photos would be higher due to printing costs, and some photos come pre-framed, but shouldn't an unframed 8x10" be more in line with his standard signing fee? Has he raised his prices that much in the last year? Is there something I'm missing? |

I don't know how much the prices are that you are looking at, but I would have thought that $80 was about the going rate? |

Most of the ones I see are in the $200 range. That's why I was asking. |

As a general rule, autograph fees and market values are not related. An autograph fee is what the astronaut wants to charge for his signature, which does not necessarily take market value into consideration. The photos of McCandless floating free of the shuttle are among the most iconic images of the space program. The market may be able to bear the higher price point because of the popularity of the photo, rather than the rarity of the autograph. |

A few years ago I bought one from the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation's store. Don't remember the price, but the 8x10 couldn't have been more than $75, and may have been $50. |

The Space Store has an 8x10 for $130 and there are currently some on eBay for potentially less if that's any use? |

At Spacefest this year McCandless was charging $50 for an autograph. If you're buying any size photo from most third parties of him it would have to be at least $75-$80 just to be halfway worthwhile to carry. That being said you should be able to get a signed 8x10 In the $50-$75 range pretty easily. I've got my huge 20x30 ready for his signature at ASF! |

Another consideration is the item the signature is on. Around $80 is about the going rate for a signed reproduction glossy. However, an unpersonalized NASA litho or NASA glossy would likely fetch a premium over a reproduction glossy. |
