It's always nice to have ARC (Advance Review Copies) of my own books - you'll know them as those paperback copies of forthcoming books, sometimes with different cover art, that a publisher sends out ahead of the "real" book to get reviews. University of Nebraska Press however neglected to give me copies of "The Light of Earth" (co-authored with Al Worden) and the book I edited, Donn Eisele's "Apollo Pilot." Does anyone have copies of each I could purchase? Thank you, Francis French |

Do they still do that? I have one from Homesteading Space, but I've never seen one from BTR?If anybody has a BTR ARC, add me to the WTB! ------------------ Homesteading Space | Bold They Rise | davidhitt.net |

Yes, for the last book the publisher promised me one, but then forgot and they were all gone by the time I reminded them, they told me. Not a big deal, but it would be lovely to own one... |

I collect ARCs and if I had received either, I would happily gift them to you, Francis (and that goes for you too, David). Unfortunately, what used to be a steady flow of ARCs prior to the pandemic, slowed down to a trickle and then ceased completely. Keep an eye on ABEBooks' listings; I've had pretty good luck finding ARCs through their network of used book sellers. (I checked and neither book currently has any ARCs listed, but still worth a periodic check.) |

Thanks Robert - both for that kind offer (especially as I recall you collecting them) and for that advice. I did have a look at ABE, but some of the sellers list things so generically (might be ex-library, might be might be to the point where it's clear they just copy and paste condition descriptions) it is hard to tell what is out there. I appreciate you keeping an eye out for David and me.

Most of the ABEBooks' sellers I have dealt with listed the books as ARCs or galley proofs, but every so often I was able to find one by noticing a book only available in hardcover was listed for sale as a softcover. As most (if not all) ARCs are softcover, it was enough to send an inquiry to verify if was a mistake or an advance reading copy. |

Frances and David, World of Books in the UK lists softcovers of both the books. If they are softcover, and you would need to confirm, then they should be the ARCs since they have not been released in softcover. They are listed on ABE. |

Thank you so much! I found the copy of "Apollo Pilot" you are referencing, but not "The Light of Earth" - so assume you must be referencing David's book when you say "both"? Thanks. |

When I asked, I got just this: Our offices and storage facilities are in different locations throughout the country so we are unable to provide additional details about individual items or guarantee particular editions for items, as in some instances publishers/producers assign the same ISBN//EAN to different editions. Oh well! |

I took a chance and ordered what they described as a softcover. And I just received - a hardcover. So now I am initiating a refund process. Ugh. Oh well! If anyone comes across any actual copies, please let me know. |

Francis, I vaguely recall being told that ARCs in softback format of "A Long Voyage..." would be made available to certain media outlets some time before publication, but I don't believe I was ever offered one. I did receive a digital review copy, and I know that digital copies were also sent out for review to some publishers and organizations. In other words, I never expected an ARC and was therefore not disappointed! I wonder if this was a consequence of the pandemic? |

They are generally never offered to the writer, pre pandemic or now, because they are for reviewers. But I was hoping to get one anyway, so I asked...
