For Sale: A complete set of 20 signed stamp blocks issued from Herman Sieger in 1971 (Armstrong, etc.).

Strikingly crisp and bright. These haven't seen much of the light of day. Stored on acid free paper. $2600. Thanks.

I'm always surprised that these sets don't sell for more considering that they include an Armstrong and Swigert along with many more hard to get... any thoughts?

Yes it's a bargain but still, $2K is a lot of money in today's poor economy. Also the actual "postage" stamps from places like Ajman, Ras-al-Kaima, Sharjah, and Yemen are basically worthless by themselves and shunned by most philatelists.

I'm inclined to agree. While it is a wonderful set, one which would look great when displayed in a museum quality frame (which is what I would do), it comes down to the stamp sheets themselves really.

Another factor is their display. How exactly does one display 20 stamp sheets of different sizes? Collectors (at least in my experience) want something that presents nicely - stamp sheets very rarely achieve that effect.

Still, I would personally pay $1250-$1500 tops for a set of this kind. And given what they were sold for originally, that is still a good markup.

I have the full set purchased from many different sources and all came with a strip of paper written in German that gave details about each astronaut. I have often wondered how these were originally packaged and sold. Were they in a booklet? Is there anyone out there who has an original set in the original packaging?

I thank everybody for their comments

I agree that the choice of stamp blocks could have been improved. All U.S. stamps? Maybe, but on the other hand the variation of countries represented goes to show that the world was watching and very interested in the space achievements on this side of the pond. The set is really remarkable with the wide range of astronauts and programs that are represented. Of course, the history of the Sieger offering has been expounded on in many discussions and its relationship to the Apollo 15 covers.

Recap: The set of astronauts represents (hopefully I haven't missed anything):

  • 4 out of 6 Mercury flights
  • 8 out of 10 Gemini flights
  • All Apollo flights with the exception of Apollo 16
  • 6 out of 12 moonwalkers
  • Apollo-Soyuz
  • Skylab
  • STS-95

  • Armstrong (Belgium)
    Gemini 8
    Apollo 11 - 1st moonwalker
  • Bean (Romania)
    Apollo 12 - 4th moonwalker
    SkyLab 3
  • Borman (Ajman)
    Genimi 7
    Apollo 8
  • Carpenter (Paraguay)
    Mercury-Atlas 7 (Aurora 7)
  • Cernan (Ajman)
    Gemini 9A
    Apollo 10
    Apollo 17 - 11th/Last moonwalker
  • Conrad (Ras-Al-Kaima)
    Gemini 5
    Gemini 11
    Apollo 12 - 3rd moonwalker
    SkyLab 2
  • Cooper (Paraguay)
    Mercury-Atlas 9 (Faith 7)
    Gemini 5
  • Cunningham (Ajman)
    Apollo 7
  • Eisele (Yemen)
    Apollo 7
  • Glenn (Ras-Al-Kaima)
    Mercury-Atlas 6 (Friendship 7)
    STS-95
  • Gordon (Hungary)
    Gemini 11
    Apollo 12
  • McDivitt (Yemen)
    Gemini 4
    Apollo 9
  • Mitchell (Romania)
    Apollo 14 - 6th moonwalker
  • Lovell (Romania)
    Gemini 7
    Gemini 12
    Apollo 8
    Apollo 13
  • Roosa (Hungary)
    Apollo 14
  • Swigert (Romania)
    Apollo 13
  • Schirra (Paraguay)
    Mercury-Atlas 8 (Sigma 7)
    Gemini 6A
    Apollo 7
  • Schweickart (Yemen)
    Apollo 9
  • Scott (Sharjah)
    Gemini 8
    Apollo 9
    Apollo 15 - 7th moonwalker
  • Stafford (Yemen)
    Gemini 6A
    Gemini 9A
    Apollo 10
    ASTP
Now the shameless plug - The set resides in sheet pages that were at one time in a presentation book. All blocks have their description sheets and have not been altered or separated that I can tell. I have no original paperwork from Sieger and I believe this set has been intact and not separated or compiled from single sheets. No tears or folds. Really great shape.

To me, it can be related to, say the flown flags. American flags with Apollo signatures will command much more and are more desirable. I would say due to pride of country? I'm sure a Russian signature on an American flag would be less desirable than on a Russian flag. As goes for all astronauts and their homeland. I believe it may transfer over to the stamps?

The market has really leaned toward what the signature is on and not so much just for the signature. One can acquire a signed Aldrin book for $50-$60. But an Apollo 11 photo for five to seven times that.

Lastly, it's harder to sell an already complete collection for what you expect. Part of the fun of collecting... is collecting. I bet you would get closer to what you are asking if you were to piece it out. Other collectors will fill the holes they need and you will get much closer to your total asking.

Just my two cents. I hope it helps a little.

Well that is actually what I have done over the years is collect the individual pieces. I now own two complete sets and four Armstrong Belgium signed stamps. I read somewhere that only 500 individual stamps where signed with Armstrong and Glenn each signing a 1000.

There is a risk here. Recently a few stamps from the set were sold for about $20 each. I wouldn't mind to buy them all for that price but shipping to Canada was not mentioned ('US only' was in the details). So... with the $20-$25 per almost every stamp would not get the seller closer to the goal.

By the way, my set is almost complete. The only stamp missing is the one with Armstrong but I can't afford it now.

All times are CT (US)
