"Final Flight": The Astronaut/Cosmonaut Memorial Patch

Since the beginning of space exploration brave men and women have dared to journey into a hostile environment in complex machines to Explore, Discover and Understand. Thirteen times those voyages ended in tragedy. This design, four years in the making attempts to pay tribute to ALL those who "gave the last full measure of devotion" to space exploration. It is dedicated to all those who continue the mission.

8-inch patch

The spacecraft sail into the unknown. A new dawn signifies the artists' belief that their souls live on. The U.S. Space Shuttle represents the crews of Challenger STS-51L and Columbia STS-107. The Russian Soyuz represents the crews of Soyuz 1 and 11. The Apollo CSM represents the crew of Apollo 1. The X-15 represents Mike Adams. The five jets flying in formation below represent: Ted Freeman, Elliott See, Charles Bassett, C.C. Williams, Robert Lawrence and Yuri Gagarin. As Ed Givens was killed in an automobile accident on the way home from an official function, he is included. Sonny Carter who perished in a commercial plane accident is also honored.

The launching rocket represents a vehicle lifting into the "Missing Man" formation as well as the efforts to Return to Flight. The Moon, Andromeda Galaxy and stars await future exploration. The rising Sun is a five point star. If you follow the lines of spacecraft from the Sun it together represent the Astronaut Symbol.

5-inch patch
