I just posted a 5 day auction on what is a combination autographed sheet. At age 13, I had the extraordinary privilege of watching the launch of Apollo 13 at the private "Astronauts Viewing Area". To my amazement, present together for the launch were Neil Armstrong and Alan Shepard! (Jan Armstrong was with Neil, as well ). I got their photos on my Kodak Instamatic and got their autographs on a brochure provided by the man who gave us the passes (Boeing's John J. Cully, project manager for the first stage of the Saturn V rocket His signature is on the sheet, also. What makes this an extraordinary, as well as super rare, item is the significance. Here on one page are autographs from the first American in space and the first man/American on the moon! Add to that the irony. The launch of the ill-fated Apollo 13 they were watching was to have Alan Shepard as commander, but he opted for Apollo 14. (as you know,he was originally assigned to command Apollo 13, but as it was felt he needed more time to train). I do not have an authenticity certificate but I was there. They signed it for me and I had their photos taken on my Instamatic camera. I DID however have it appraised at the finest space auction place in America: Heritage Auction of Dallas, Texas. John Hickey of Heritage Client Services wrote after examining it: "A very interesting item. While multi-signed pieces, especially with folks from different missions, often are a bit "soft" in value, yours does have something of a "theme", as you note. We believe this would be in the general area of $1,500 in value... with a bit of "upsideā potential." |

While it should not take anything away from your sale, you may want to remove the line from your description: You will NOT find this combination of these two signatures anywhere, ever. I have seen other pieces signed by Armstrong and Shepard. Yours is not unique in that regard.(Armstrong and Shepard, together with Jim Lovell and Jimmy Dolittle, signed 100 limited edition art prints titled "Lindbergh Arrives Over Paris".) |
