Can anyone point me to the best place to find an inexpensive Apollo 16 crew portrait? It don't want one that's signed, it doesn't have to be vintage; I just need a decent quality Apollo 16 crew picture to hang on the wall of what may be the only first grader in the country who is obsessed with Apollo 16 specifically. Thanks!

You could print one out at home, or have a nice print done at your local place for a couple of bucks, using images you can find on several NASA photo websites. I've done a lot of photo-finding in the last month, so I'll send you an e-mail when I get home with the links to those sites.

That being said, I have a nice crew photo (the three of them standing in their spacesuits) signed by Charlie Duke. When I e-mail I'll attach a scan and you can let me know if you are interested.

neke - I have hi-res scans of the Apollo 16 crew portrait (a couple different variants of such). I could e-mail you one and you could print it out using an online photo developer, such as Shutterfly or Mpix. It wouldn't cost you very much...only a few dollars to get a nice print.

Also, if he is particularly interested in Apollo 16, you may wish to consider getting a photo signed by Charlie Duke for him. Duke will sign it through the mail for a $75 fee (his address can be found in the "resources" section of collectSPACE)...and would more-than-likely be happy to personalize the photo for your son and add a neat inscription for him. Duke is a great guy and I'm sure he'd do a fantastic job for your son...especially if you tell Duke it's for a first grader who is particularly interested in the Apollo 16 mission.

Thanks for the responses. I had thought about having one printed up, but couldn't find an image file that had high enough resolution. So if either of you could point me towards one or email one to me, I'd be very grateful.

My son actually already has a small postcard autographed by Charlie Duke. We were watching the "In the Shadow of the Moon" DVD and Charlie (my son) was very excited when he learned that someone named Charlie had gone to the moon. He decided he wanted to write to Charlie Duke, which he did -- all by himself -- and received the postcard in the mail a couple weeks later. He took the card to his grandparents' house, his aunt's house, and school and showed it to everyone who would look. (I'm now getting it framed for him to hang in his room, before it gets any more fingerprinty and dog-eared.) So that's why he loves Apollo 16 so much.

I'm going to the ASF event in November, so if he's still as fascinated with Apollo 16 come November I will probably get him a nice personalized picture then. For now a crew portrait that I can just have printed out would be fine!

Thanks!

Charlie is a great guy, one of the best there is. Here is a pic of him holding my son Liam. Liam may not realise the significance of this pic now but in years to come he will appreciate it no end, just as your son will with his signed pictures.
Thanks to my right hand man Rick Mulheirn for taking the photo.

I've been with Charlie for a few days this week. Charlie has asked me to be his representative/agent for his European visits which is a real honour.

Great photo Andy. The photographer clearly has talent and I suspect.... the looks of George Clooney!

Charlie now has his Apollo 16 crew portrait. I found a file online and had an 8x10 printed up at Walgreen's for $3. Thanks Steve and Mark!

StarDome -- he's adorable! (And the baby is cute too!) All kidding aside, that's a great picture.

Great pic and it looks like our older hero enjoyed the posing just as much!

Yep, both had a great time.

Charlie Duke is such a wonderful man I never tire of spending time with him. Knowing him personally is great too.

As for my sons, Liam is going to be interested in space I am sure, where as my elder son Elliott who is 15 isn't interested at all as "That's what dad does!" mind you it didn't stop him accompanying me on the QE-2 when I was lecturing on there last year! - Dad wasn't so boring then.

The picture with Liam was taken in Norwich.

Charlie is currently in Basle, Switzerland and he is returning to Texas next week.

All times are CT (US)
