On Thursday, Guy Gardner was the speaker at a luncheon at the Chestnut Hill Presbyterian Church in the northern suburbs of Philadelphia. Col. Gardner talked about his career as a pilot saying that he his a desire to become an astronaut began when he was a child in the 1950's reading sci-fi books and magazines. He went about his goal by attending the Air Force Academy class of 1969, going through the Air Force's fight school and becoming a fighter pilot, becoming a test pilot and then applying to become an astronaut. He was selected in the class of 1980. He then showed a film about his two shuttle flights and then gave a talk with pictures about The Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades in nearby Media, PA, where he is currently the President. A Q&A session followed and Col. Gardner stayed afterwards and mingled with the audience. | |
