Portsmouth Festivities: Space City 16th - 26th June 2011 From Aliens to Astronauts and Classics to the Cosmos, this year we will be reaching for the skies to celebrate Portsmouth: Space City. Inspired by the city's motto Heaven's Light Our Guide our programme will mark Portsmouth's role as a centre of excellence for cosmology, astronomy and space technology - and science fiction will also feature, inspired by the 'father of science fiction' former Portsmouth resident HG Wells. Internationally renowned figures from the world of music and the arts, science and technology will take part in a wide range of events including an opening weekend featuring NASA Astronauts Andrew Thomas and Shannon Walker and a finale weekend ending with Lift Off! a large-scale community outdoor event celebrating space and the history and science of flight with a carnival procession and twilight fire spectacular! |

-Wow- I watched the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra last night and I will say it again. Wow. Starting out with the main title from Star Wars and ending in Holst’s The Planets Mars, they played perfectly and brought my wife to tears. The special bonus for me was after giving their brief speech, Andrew Thomas and Shannon Walker came to the back and sat in the empty seats directly on my right! Listening to the Apollo 13 theme, with a veteran of 161 days on the ISS sat next to me was a treat!

I couldn't make it last night. So who managed to get there and what was it like? |

We managed to get there. Unfortunately arrived late, missed the first half hour. Had half day off and drove down 170 miles, the last 50 of them in the rain and queuing traffic from the A34/M3 junction all the way into Portsmouth, terrible journey. Multiple pile up on the M40 hope everyone involved got out safely. Parked the car and got soaked running to the venue. (Alright running may have been an exaggeration, athletes we're not). The audience probably had trouble hearing over the prolonged panting! Great talk for the next hour plenty of video; Andy Thomas and Shannon Walker took turns in presenting. A Q&A followed and then a relaxed time for autographs and informal chatting and photos. Well done to both. Congrats to the organisers, hello to Rob Wood who also made it down. I was pleased had not met/seen either of them before... could have sat and listened for longer, always enlightening. Fish and chip supper by the sea and straight back for home arriving about 23.30 hours, an articulated lorry was on fire on the A34 on the return leg. Ran the gauntlet of smoke and fumes. |

Sounds like an eventful but worthwhile journey. Catch up with you soon no doubt? |
