Editor's note: Though the stated deadline has passed, at the time of this posting registration appears to still be open.
First NASA Astronaut To Send Live Tweet From Space Hosts Tweetup In The Nation's Capitol

NASA invites Twitter followers to a behind-the scenes NASA Tweetup at 3 p.m. EDT on Thursday, July 29, at NASA Headquarters in Washington. This NASA Tweetup is an opportunity to meet and speak with astronaut T.J. Creamer, the people behind @NASA, and other space-exploration-minded participants.

While in space, Creamer set up the orbiting outpost's live Internet connection and posted updates about the mission to his Twitter account, sending the first live tweet from orbit.

Creamer spent 161 days living aboard the International Space Station as part of the Expedition 22/23 crew. He launched aboard a Soyuz spacecraft in December 2009 and returned to Earth June 2, 2010. While in space, Creamer posted updates about the mission to his Twitter account, @Astro_TJ.

The NASA Tweetup will take place in the James E. Webb Memorial Auditorium at NASA Headquarters, 300 E Street, SW, Washington.

Registration for the event is open from noon EDT, Friday, July 9 until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 13. NASA will randomly select 100 participants from Web registrants. Additional applicants will be placed on a waiting list.

What is a Tweetup?
A Tweetup is an informal meeting of people who use the social messaging medium Twitter. This Tweetup is an opportunity in Washington, D.C.

How do I register?
Registration opens at noon EDT on Friday, July 9 on this page and will remain open until 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 13. NASA will accommodate 100 tweeps randomly selected from those who sign up on the Web. Additional registrants will be placed on a waiting list.

Do I need to have a Twitter account to register?
Yes. This event is designed for Twitter users who follow @NASA, @Astro_TJ and other NASA Twitter accounts. The goal is to allow people who regularly interact with each other via Twitter to meet in person and discuss their favorite subjects: space and science.

What are the registration requirements?
Registration indicates your intent to travel to the NASA Headquarters in Washington and attend the event in person. You are responsible for your own expenses for travel, accommodation, food and other amenities.

To be admitted, you will need to show a government-issued identification (driver's license or passport) that matches the name provided on the registration. Those without proper identification cannot be admitted. Registrants must be at least 18 years old; however, their guests do not need to be 18 or older.

Can I register if I am not a U.S. citizen?
Yes, non-U.S. citizens may register to attend the Tweetup.

Does my registration include a guest?
Yes, you may bring a guest to this Tweetup. We recommend your guest be at least 5 years old to appreciate the event.

What if I cannot come to Washington, D.C.?
If you cannot come to NASA Headquarters to attend in person, you do not need to register for the Tweetup. However, you can still plan to follow along with the event on Twitter via the hashtags #NASATweetup and in NASA's Buzzroom.

If you can't make this Tweetup, don't despair; NASA is planning others in the near future at various agency locations.

When will I know if I made it?
After NASA has received and processed the registrations, an e-mail with confirmation information and additional instructions will be sent to those selected and those on the waitlist. We expect to send notifications on July 15.

I made it! I'm happy to say, after many attempts over several months for various events, I'm on the list! I've walked past NASA headquarters many times, but never had a reason to go in. I hope to take photos and will post them and a story about my day here and on my twitter site (Spaceman101). I hope everyone will be able to see the broadcast on Thursday. I'll probably be wearing my Sportsradio 610WIP (The Philly sports station that I do my weekly NASA update) hat.

If anyone has any questions that they think I should ask, please send them to me!

Just back from DC! I survived a HUGE thunderstorm and even though I was soaked, I made it to the building in time! Not only was Thursday, my first NASA tweetup, it was first time in NASA Headquarters.

TJ was VERY receptive to all of us tweeps. The hour long show when very fast and he stayed for an extra 45 minutes answering questions and more important for me, signing autographs.

After being first in line to have him sign my printout of his first tweet from space and a photo collage of his mission, I noticed everyone had the official portrait be it in the Russian Sokol suit. As I was leaving I was told that they had brought down more of the portraits so I was able to get that signed as well! Photos to follow!
