2/17: Life in Space with Reilly, Lawrence

Event will Feature Former NASA Astronauts and Current APU Faculty Jim Reilly and Wendy Lawrence

American Public University (APU) today announced it will host a complimentary, live webcast, "Life in Space," featuring two former NASA astronauts now serving on the APU faculty.

Dr. Jim Reilly, Dean of the APU School of Science and Technology and Capt. Wendy Lawrence, (USN, Ret.) Professor of Space Physiology at APU, will discuss their personal experiences living and working in space.

During the webcast, Dr. Reilly and Capt. Lawrence will address a variety of topics, including:

Living and working onboard the International Space Station
The long-term effects living in space has on the human body and mind, including challenges such as bone and muscle mass loss
Traveling in space, including the journey from liftoff to re-entry
How education will shape the future of the U.S. space program and exploration of interplanetary space

Following their presentation, Dr. Reilly and Capt. Lawrence will engage the audience in a question and answer session.

Prior to joining APUS, Dr. Reilly enjoyed a long career at NASA, where he logged 850 hours in space with five spacewalks on three Space Shuttle missions. Before his NASA experience, he spent 17 years in the petroleum sector as a manager and exploration geologist in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Reilly also serves as the curriculum developer and instructor for the US Navy in Space Operations working via the Advanced Space Operations School operated by the Air Force.

Capt. Lawrence is a retired naval aviator with 25 years of service. While stationed at HC-6 and HSL-30 Det ALFA, she made deployments to the North Atlantic, Indian Ocean and Kenya. She was selected as an astronaut mission specialist in 1992 and worked at NASA for 14 years. She is a veteran of four shuttle missions (STS-67, 86, 91 and 114) and has logged over 50 days in space.
