Have you heard when the tickets become available? There's nothing on the website about it.

No idea. They often just show up on the web site, so keep checking back.

Who is attending Joe Engle's presentation at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum this month? I have three photos I would like to get signed.

Are you sure he will be signing?

The listing on the NASM site does not specify, and it seems to be the exception at NASM lectures.

I don't know if he will sign there or not. If he does, he does; if not, little is lost in trying.

I had the pleasure of meeting General Engle and his wife in 2007 at Oshkosh, Wisconsin. General Engle gave an outstanding lecture on the X-15 program and I could listen to him talk about it for days. General Engle was very kind in autographing a couple of items for me as well that day. Just listening to his lectures was great. Getting an autograph was a added bonus that day. If you ever get the chance to attened a lecture by General Engle I encourage all to attend.

A couple of years ago General Engle spoke at NASM and was available for autographs afterwards. He was pretty liberal signing for people and I had a picture and a book signed. He's a great gentleman and seemed to be enjoying the event.

After what happended at the recent Space Day event at the NASM, I would be pleasently surprised if there is an autograph seesion with Gen. Engle afterwards. While Gen. Engle is generally more than willing to sign items, the powers that be at the NASM may well now have a no autograph policy at events, other than booksignings.

I have to differ with you on that... It's just the opposite, most events/lectures do have autograph signings afterwards, unless the event is well attended, as Space Day was, or the attendee/speaker/event is popular/well known, or is anti-autographing, but even then I've seen difficult autographers be talked into an autograph session by the NASM powers that be. Also, the people that handle evening events are different than the people that handle the daytime event. Totally different staffers...

The NASM website is usually very clear in stating when the speaker will NOT be available for signing after the event. For example, that was the case for the Apollo 8 reunion, and the Apollo 11 anniversary event is also marked as such. I take the lack of such a notice on the website as a portent that Gen. Engle will be signing.

I just ask people to PLEASE be reasonable and not bring an armload of things to be signed. At a lecture three years ago with Stafford, Schirra, and Cernan, the ticket holders were instructed that the astros would sign one copy of their books or one photograph each. I don't think that's an unreasonable request.

I can only hope your advice is taken seriously by all attendees. A few folks at the recent Sally Ride book signing got out of control with multiple items. If he does agree to sign, please be reasonable. It is quite embarrassing to see folks loaded up with items and makes the guest quite uncomfortable which in turn ruins the entire experience for all involved. Realistically, you should limit yourself to one item, if indeed he agrees to sign.

Actually, if I recall correctly, when Gen. Engle spoke at the NASM in 2003, the rule for the autograph session afterwards was 2 items per person. Of course that does not meen that if he signs tomorrow evening, that the 2 item rule will still be in effect for this occasion.

Great presentation by Gen. Engle this evening! The lecture was preceded by 3 short NASA and Air Force films about the X-15 program. Gen. Engle also showed a 12-minute film at the end of his lecture to illustrate some of the points he had been talking about.

I learned a lot about the results of the program that I had never heard before. For example, he put up a slide demonstrating the similarities in the landing characteristics of the X-15 and the Space Shuttle. They were remarkably similar in altitude at start of final approach, sink rate, and speed at landing.

Gen. Engle gave a technical talk about the X-15 and the goals and results of the program. He illustrated concepts using a model of the X-15. He supplemented with some great one-liners and asides ("I really miss that sexy silver spacesuit!"). He took a lot of questions from the audience, and he graciously agreed to sign autographs for people afterward. He was also awarded a beautiful medal of Charles Lindberg, which he requested be taken down to where he was signing autographs so that everyone could see it up close. It looked to me that about 50 people took him up on his offer to sign.

As always, it was wonderful to run into cS'rs throughout the evening.

Good write-up and great photos, Jonathan. Wasn't that something when his first reaction when given that great medal was to request that it be brought out into the hall, so other people could see it during the signing? A brilliant, talented, classy man.

I'll just add that General Engle covered every technical detail about the history, design, and flight characteristics of the X-15 that one could want to hear; but also added fascinating or funny first-hand experiences.

His explanation for why he rolled the X-15 on his first flight was classic. But I also liked why he actually HOPED that BOTH the windows of the plane would crack and glaze, as one occasionally did. He said that the procedure was to get down to a certain altitude, which he knew he could with no problem thanks to help from the ground. But then they were supposed to blow the canopy off and land with the top down... or off, I guess. He said that he would have looked so cool in his silver spacesuit; and that he even kept an aviator-style silk scarf tucked in a pocket that he would have wrapped around his neck for just such an occasion.

Good to meet you Steve and Jonathan and renew other cS friendships with about six others... I heard Steve mention collectSPACE and I jumped in and introduced myself.

A tremendous lecture on the X-15 by Gen. Engle... and afterwards, we looked at the traits of the X-15 that he told us about.

Gen. Engle was gracious to sign my Space Shuttle 20 book as was Dr. T. Jones.

A wonderful night to be in the museum and tomorrow the "Night at the Air and Space Museum" premieres at a theatre near you...

He was very gracious in speaking about the decision to have a geologist Apollo 17, even though it may have cost him a slot. Does anyone know if it was indeed his slot before the cancellations?

It definitely was his slot. As Engle said, he had already been training with Cernan and Evans as backups on Apollo 14. I always felt bad that he (and Dick Gordon, Jim Lovell, and Fred Haise) never got a chance to walk on the Moon.

I took a 2TV-1 patch to the lecture for Engle to sign. On the way home I was reflecting at the contrast between the X-15 missions he flew (Mach 5 and 300,000 feet in just a few minutes) and the 2TV-1 "mission" (sitting in a CM with a leaky toilet in a vacuum chamber for 8 days). I'm sure he had to be wondering what he got himself into when he joined NASA!!

Thank you, I really obtained an enhanced appreciation for the X-15 program after last night, afterwards it was neat to look at the features of the plane that he spoke about during his lecture.

Deke Slayton wrote in his memior 'Deke' that he had, in fact, assigned then-Col. Engle to fly as LMP on Apollo 17 along with Capt. Cernan and Capt. Evans. However, according to Deke Slayton, the people at NASA headquarters that had to approve his crew assignments rejected this one and insisted that Dr. Schmitt be the LMP on the final lunar landing. During the autograph session last night, I asked Gen. Engle if he would have remained an astronaut and flown the space shuttle if he had flown in Apollo, and he replied that he certainly would have. He said that flying a spacecraft with a stick and rudder was the kind of spaceflight that he looked forward to.

My son Michael and I enjoyed meeting al the cS folks at this fantastic event.

Joe Engle was very engaging during the signing and signed everything we asked of him. A true gentleman, with a great sense of humor.

These are events to remember, and attend when you can!

If it was indeed 12, that is really out of control. It is indicative of the problem and folks wonder why these guys have stopped signing. Keep it up and you will eventually ruin the experience for all of us and drive these guys, as many have, to fee only autographs. Is was ironic, because as Engle began to sign at the welcome desk, director Dailey warned him facetiously to "watch out" for these autograph guys. But, I think the horse is already out of the barn regarding this situation, so get your checkbook ready.

Well I guess we'll see some of them on Ebay soon!

When I met Gen Engle a small event in the UK a couple of years ago there were only 3 or 4 of us asking nicely for an autograph or two (no more). Joe was gracious but did add "these aren't going to appear on eBay are they?." TWELVE is WAY out of order.

Joe Engle is a truly class guy. His recent concern and emails we shared when Bob White was under the weather recently showed a compassion rarely seen.

I look forward to seeing him at the X-15 event in Lancaster, CA in October.

U-G-H is right. Come on, people...TWELVE items??? That's downright despicable. Seriously, what's the point in that? You can't honestly say you had 11 people ask you to get an item signed for them.

As was stated above, it's this type of behavior that ruins it for the rest of us and drives these guys to start charging for their autographs. I'd love to hear the justification for getting that many items signed. Give me a break.

Kudos to Gen. Engle for signing so willingly after the lecture, but shame on anyone who took advantage of his generosity.

Jamie
