National Geographic Channel is showing Direct From the Moon tonight (Nov. 17) at 9 p.m. EST/PST:
With stunning footage from the Kaguya lunar orbiter, NGC reveals images of the moon and Earth like never seen before, and unlocks the secrets of 4.5 billion years of Earth, moon and solar system history.

I'm really looking forward to this but how can a satellite bring us closer to the moon "than ever before" when humans have been there? Walking on the moon is about as close as you can get, HDTV or not! :-)

True, but for us mere earth-dwellers, HD is as close as we'll get. And just imagine where the technology will be in 2020. We'll be watching the next steps on the moon live in High Def.

Any word on if this will be available online for those of us tightwads who don't have the super duper cable package?

Checkout this page where the special images available from JAXA compared with Apollo 15 images. We never needed proof the Moon landings were the real deal. The images obtained through 3D imaging compared with the NASA images we know and love prove it beyond any reasonable doubt.

The "halo" area around Apollo 15 landing site observed by Terrain Camera on Selene (Kaguya).

For Earthrise images follow this link.

At the recent IAC Congress in Glasgow JAXA had a large flat screen monitor showing Selene video in a loop... stunning, it seemed so fantastic, so unreal. I wonder when National Geographic programme will be available here! Not too long I hope.

It was a beautiful program, but played a little loose with the facts on several occasions. And the vertical scale exaggeration of West Crater in the Apollo 11 landing sequence was wayyyyy overdone - it made it look like they were about to land in the Grand Canyon. But overall, spectacular imagery when it stuck to the "real thing," and it looked stunning on the ol' plasma HDTV!

It was a good program. I was a bit surprised (and pleased) that Harrison Schmidt chose to participate as you don't normally see him on these sort of shows.

For our friends without cable access, or outside the US, I believe the web site offers programs on demand, and will most likely offer this one (and Five Years on Mars) at some point.

I think I need to start looking at upgrading my satellite to HD. There seems to be a lot more of this stuff now on DirecTV!

Looked really good though otherwise.

For those who missed this broadcast last November, I have just heard from National Geographic that it will be released on DVD (Region 1) on May 26.

Pre-orders through National Geographic's website will begin April 21, or you can order through Amazon.com.
