Four time flier Michael Gernhardt was the luncheon speaker today at the Human Systems Intergration Symposium in Annapolis, Maryland. I spoke with Dr. Gernhardt for a few moments before the luncheon. We talked briefly about his driving the prototype on the Lunar Rover in the inaugural parade in January.
Dr. Gernhardt said that he was doubtful that any further attempt would be made to extend the shuttle program in order to 'close the gap', although he thought that it was still possible that a couple of missions could be added and that the shuttle could remain flying through 2011.
He also said that while he would like to fly on one of the remaining shuttle flights, that he hopes to remain in the astronaut office long enough to be on one of the Orion lunar landings.
He signed my copy of the book 'The Space Shuttle: The First 20 Years'.
