Celebrating humanity's first 50 years in space, Expo participants include Mercury astronauts John Glenn and Scott Carpenter as well as spaceflight veterans Eileen Collins, Susan Helms, Kathy Sullivan and Anousheh Ansari. The Expo also features a special "Aerial Salute to 50 Years in Space," taking place on the NASA Causeway overlooking the Banana River to include: - U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Aerial Demonstration Squadron

In addition to the above mentioned exhibits, also on display is Vostok 3KA-2, the fifth and final Vostok to fly before the first manned spaceflight by Yuri Gagarin.Launched into space on March 25, 1961, 3KA-2 was "piloted" by Ivan Ivanovich, a mannequin, and a live dog, Zvezdochka. After orbiting the Earth with his canine companion for 115 minutes, Ivan and Zvevdochka were both successfully ejected upon re-entry and landed near the Ural Mountains. The Vostok is on display inside the Early Space Exploration Gallery at the visitor's complex, positioned next to Mercury 12B, the back-up to Wally Schirra's Sigma 7. Vostok 3KA-2 was previously on display outside SPACE.com's headquarters in New York and was later at the Omniplex in Oklahoma City. |

Rob--Yes, it was a good show Friday night. Glenn said he looked forward to a return to the moon, Mars, and beyond by this nation. He wasn't to happy about prior budget cuts to space research and possibly continued ISS-money cuts. He has been urging Congress to expand funding so Americans would see the full benefit of their $100 billion investment in the space station. He also took time to dispel rumors during a Q&A session with master of ceremonies Al Worden. "It is absolutely not true NASA wouldn't let me do a spacewalk because they feared I would wander off somewhere," he joked. Carpenter said, "Just wait, You ain't seen nothing yet," in discussing future advances from continued space research and technological benefits. Even with storm clouds overhead, the weather did hold back for all the outdoor activities, making it a pleasant evening for my wife and I.
