Omniplex, Science Museum Oklahoma Announces Inductees for the Centennial Celebration of the Oklahoma Aviation and Space Hall of Fame

Aviation and space industry leaders and business executives will converge at Omniplex, Science Museum Oklahoma Wednesday, October 17 to honor two inductees and a special award recipient. Dr. Benton C. Clark, III, (Capt., USAF) and John B. Herrington (Cmdr., USN, Ret.) will join the elite group of past inductees as the newest members. A special Oklahoma Aviator of the Century award will be presented to Thomas P. Stafford (Lt. Gen., USAF, Ret.).

The Oklahoma Aviation and Space Hall of Fame began in 1979 to honor Oklahomans who have contributed to the advancement of aviation and space science, the development of the aerospace industry, and the use of air power in defense of our nation. Past recipients include aviation pioneers Wiley Post and Will Rogers as well as astronauts Gordon Cooper and Shannon Lucid, plus many more.

Typically, induction ceremonies take place once every two years. However, the 2006 ceremony was postponed in order to make way for a larger Centennial Celebration. Don Otto, Omniplex, Science Museum Oklahoma president, said the ceremony not only focuses on Oklahomans' and their influence on the aerospace industries of the past century but also of the next.

"Oklahomans have consistently impacted the aviation and space industries with innovative, forward-thinking ideas and creative thoughts," said Otto. "The Hall of Fame is our way of paying tribute to scientists and pilots of the past as well as celebrating current aviators and astronauts, all the while remembering we must continue to inspire young scientists and engineers who will shape our nation's future."

The Centennial Celebration of the Oklahoma Aviation and Space Hall of Fame begins Wednesday, October 17. The ceremony and luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m., with a special hard-hat tour of Destination Space scheduled for 11a.m. The first phase of Destination Space, the museum's newest hands-on exhibit, officially opens to the public later in the fall. The Hall of Fame event is open to the public, with individual ticket prices set at $55. Corporate sponsorship opportunities also are available. To reserve your ticket, call (405) 602-6664.
