Select Committee oral evidence session, to be held at the National Space Centre in Leicester.

A top-level public inquiry into the future of space policy in the UK is to come to Leicester, allowing the public access to the Parliamentary process.

Members of the general public will be able to attend the oral evidence session, which will focus on the role of space within education.

The Science and Technology Committee launched a major and wide-ranging inquiry into aspects of UK space policy last year. The Committee is monitoring progress towards the strategic objectives of UK space policy and addressing some key broad issues, including the following:
• The impact of current levels of investment on space-related activities on the UK’s international competitiveness in this sector;
• The benefits and value for money obtained from participation in the European Space Agency and other international programmes;
• The maximisation of commercial benefits and wealth creation from UK space-based technologies through innovation and knowledge transfer;
• The delivery of public benefits from the space-related activities of different Government departments (eg DEFRA, MoD, DTI, DfT), and the co-ordination of these activities; and
• Support for space-related research and the UK skills base.

At the meeting, evidence will be heard from:

Ms Julie Bramman, Divisional Manager for School Curriculum, Department for Education and Skills;

Dr Robin Clegg, Head of Science and Society, Particle Physics and
Astronomy Research Council (PPARC);

Paul Spencer, Evaluator and Consultant, Space Connections; and

Professor Alan Wells, Emeritus Professor and Leverhulme Emeritus Fellow, University of Leicester, Non-Executive Director, National Space Centre

The session will take place on 30 January at 3.00pm in the Shuttle Suite, National Space Centre, Leicester.

Members of the public wishing to attend the evidence session should email malikaa@spacecentre.co.uk

Yup, we have a Space Policy, but if you want to find out how it is changing come along to the event.

This part is looking at education, but you may also be aware of Mike Griffin coming over and the STS-121 crew talking to the committee already about the UK's lack of financial participation in human spaceflight, well reading the papers recently you may have seen that this is also under review!!!!

Hi,
I know it's a bit sad to admit to watching the UK Parliament channel (especially at night) but I did the other night especially as they had recorded interviews discussing UK space policy. The Director General (David Williams)of the BNSC said he could not see any reason for the UK to have a manned space programme/participant in the next 30-40 years.
Its just that attitude that now sees our great nation in the doldrums as far as exploration, science and technology. Little wonder kids are turning their backs on science, who do they look up to; to inspire them. O.K we are still great at what we do, we certainly have the brains and the innovators and we are still in there with lots of small programmes; but we could be at the front of the queue and not hanging onto the coatails of other European countries. Partnership is the way forward but lets be equal partners. It's the old story but money spent on Space is really money spent down here on earth creating jobs, creating opportunities and motivating society to 'Aim Higher'.Far more productive than the next nuclear deterrent.

Promise you they get no free lunch here - we are an educational charity after all.

I also don't see them getting an easy ride either.

All UK governments, whether Conservative or New Labour, are not interested in human space travel.
Unless of course our proposed lunar probe was to discover vast amounts of oil there (!)

All times are CT (US)
