I will be there as well. I am glad I get to see one of these presentations so close to home. I'm wondering what the crowd will be like. Last time I seen John Glenn give an open public speech at OSU the auditorium was packed full. I've see both Glenn and Armstrong together before and they really seem to have a good time together, this should be really good.

I just got back from the event at Ohio State Page Hall. Jam1970, I think I was standing with your dad, but you weren't there? I didn't catch this post prior to the event so I wasn't on the lookout for other cSers. I brought my two young sons to the event. Only a few people there at 2:45 for the 4:00 event, but I would say there were several hundred by the time it started. There was a lot of anticipation waiting for Neil Armstrong and John Glenn to come down the elevators into the atrium where the program took place. We were told a little too late about a photo op. for kids upstairs just prior to the event. Not to disappoint, there was time for photos afterwards with the astronauts present including Armstrong, Glenn, Kathy Sullivan and Steven Robinson who presented the award to Glenn; they allowed only families with children to have their photographs taken with the line-up. Glenn was there with many members of his family as were several WW2 pilots and heros and even the great-grandaugher (or great great) of the Wright Brothers. I had heard that Armstrong was going to leave the event, but that others could stay for photos afterwards at a small reception. I'm not sure if Armstrong stayed or not. No autographs, but an aide allowed me to leave a package with two event programs to have inscribed to my kids which she said she would have Senator Glenn signed this evening. It was absolutely amazing to stand next to Glenn and Armstrong for a picture--and me and my kids were even lucky enough to shake their hands, too! It was kind of sad, though, during the program a kid probably of about 16 asked me what John Glenn was famous for. And there were maybe only a handful of college students there to see the presentation.

The moonrock will be on display in about two weeks at Page Hall. They have a wonderful collection of John Glenn relics on display.

I just returned from the Glenn Ambassador of Exploration Award Ceremony as well. I was a little disapointed that the event was held in a relatively small atrium area. All the seating was for VIP memebers only. All others in attendance had to gather to the right of the podium about 20 feet from the where the speakers were. Glenn & Armstrong walked right by those of us standing as they exited the elavator. Pretty cool! At the end of the ceremony it was announced that you could have your picture taken with those astronauts who had made arrangemnts to stay. I immediately thought what most everyone else would think. Armstrong would not be present for pictures. Nonetheless, I proceeded to get in the picture line that started on the second floor and went all the way up to the third floor. It was announced that all pictures would be taken by a staff photographer and that no one was allowed to take their own pictures, shake the astronauts hands or ask for autographs in order to keep the line moving. All the way up the stairs I kept wondering who would be in the picture line. Much to my suprise when I finally reached the third floor and turned the corner to see Armstrong there with Glenn, Kathy Sullivan and Steven Robinson I was thrilled. For me it was a four for one bonanza. However, I must say that I still can not believe that I had by
picture taken with Neil Armstrong.

Well worth the three hours I spent standing watching the ceremony and in the picture line.

Yes DSeuss5490 that was my father and I didn't get to go- My employer didn't agree that going to see Armstrong and Glenn was a good enough reason to leave work early. He said it was a great once in a lifetime chance to be side by side with two orginal astronauts of his time. Just waiting for the pictures to be posted. I am glad that they allowed the public to more than just watch the event.

I agree with the posts. I was surprisingly underwhelmed by the lack of space for the public at the event. Standing at the left of the stage posed a photographic challenge. One had to shoot towards a large bank of windows, so it was difficult to get more than a silhouette. The astronauts who spoke were very interesting, with Neil and John giving some very amusing anecdotes. Great things were said about Annie and astronauts Brown, Sullivan and Robinson. OSU certainly redeemed themselves from the lack of space with the great photo op after the ceremony. I was stunned and so very excited to see Neil in attendance for it. Was a great thrill is was to stand in between Neil and John, especially with my son and daughter!! Great job President Holbrook and Provost Snyder!

I was one of the first dozen or so spectators to arrive at the event. Except for a small gap of about 8 feet between a hall/wall and elevator shaft there were few places for the commoners to view the event. We were able to see the ceremony clearly where we were, but taking photos was impossible as I think nojnj mentioned. I'm sure I saw you there nojnj. I later found out that the public was allowed access to the cat-walk over the atrium, but that filled quickly. That appeared to be the perfect spot to view the event. Armstrong was visibly moved when he spoke of John Glenn, his voice trembling when he mentioned their friendship. Armstrong had this little story about how he was living in California in 1962 and his son was a huge fan of this space cartoon called Captain Cargo(?). Im not familiar with the cartoon, but Armstrong said that when they were watching Glenn boarding for his space flight on February 20, 1962 his son shouted out "don't do it Mr. Glenn it's a trap!" Referencing I suppose the story-lines of Captain Cargo. It was very amusing. The photo line I was on with the kids went quickly I thought. I was surprised when both Armstrong and Glenn extended their hands to my sons which was real cool. Something they'll never forgot--and they are only 11 and 6. Grandma stopped by this evening and asked what the kids did for their holiday weekend. My six year old told her--Oh, not much, I just went to an Ohio State hockey game, an Ohio State basketball game, a birthday party, bowling, a cub scout dinner, saw the Pink Panther movie and oh, one more thing: today I met Neil Armstrong and John Glenn! Not a bad weekend!

Although the venue was too small for the crowd, the staff were top notch in their helpfulness and courtesy. They did provide large monitors in many areas. But you always want to see with your own eyes, instead of seeing them on TV again.

I was also happily shocked to see Neil Armstrong in the photo line-up. Here's me with my daughter Stephanie: http://relations.osu.edu/photography/dc06_glennasa_gallery/pages/_MG_3578.htm

They did their best to get everyone through in the short time available. I only wish I had more than 10 seconds. We had enough time to say hi, and about 5 more words. In the photo Neil is saying, "Hi, Stephanie, " as I had just quickly said, "This is my daughter, Stephanie."

But we got to hear the speeches and meet them, which was great.

nojnj, it appears you were in front of me as we observed from the podium 3 o'clock position. Lots of standing time. Take care.

Thanks to everyone for sharing, and bravo! Memories that will last a lifetime. Kudos to the organizers and the celebrities for oganizing the photo-op. I am VERY envious.

Neil is shorter than John? For some reason, I thought it would be the other way around.

I was surprised how short I am in that company. I might have made a good Mercury astronaut candidate! Maybe I would fit well in Gus Grissom's couch.

I was there as well and very much enjoyed the presentation and the speeches by all that gave them. I was very dissapointed in the ability to actually see the event. I was unaware of the space above the area that you could look down on the ceremony until afterward. But none the less I got a decent view from the side of the podium. They have an auditorium in that building and I really wish they would have made use of it for this event. I was pleasantly surprised at all the astronauts that were there. No one else mentioned, but Mark Brown (STS 28,48)was also there but did not stay for the photos. The photos were a terrific addition to this great event. Wow to stand with such great and notable space heros was awesome. They let anyone get there photo taken with them (kids or no kids) as I had my photo taken with them by myself as many others did as well.

Does anyone know how long the whole thing lasted? I was there until about 5:30, leaving just after the photo op and dropping a couple of items off for signing at Senator Glenn's office. The assistant I spoke with said that if Mr. Glenn was allowed the opportunity he would sign autographs, pose for pictures and have a personal conversation with everyone in attendance! I know there was some sort of reception downstairs in the exhibit gallery and entrance. Did the astronauts go down to that? Also, I'm pretty sure that was Mark Brown who posed for pictures with us early-on. Perhaps he left for the later group that came through. A great event!

We stayed until 6 PM, when they moved everyone out. The celebrities left at 6 PM by bus to have dinner at the OSU President's home.
