I had the pleasure of attending today's 51-L Memorial at the US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, AL, near the Marshall Space Flight Center. I thought I'd share a couple of pictures in case anyone was interested:

A large crowd of visitors and NASA employees gathered under the Pathfinder Space Shuttle exhibit for the event...

Another view of the crowd...

"The Rocket Boys" author and retired NASA engineer Homer Hickam attended and signed autographs for the crowd...

MSFC Director David King was the keynote speaker...

A wreath near the stage recalled the lost orbiter...

I thought it was a very nice service, which ended with the sounding of a bell seven times to remember the 51-L crew. The weather was beautiful, and I'm glad I had the chance to be there.

I'm glad you enjoyed the photos! I was really thrilled to have been there. I've been wanting to make the drive (from northeast Indiana) for years. For some reason, we picked this weekend, and the timing was perfect. I couldn't have been in a better place to share this experience with others who cared.

The message was very upbeat. One of the speakers said that we were not there to mourn the 51-L crew, but instead to remember their bravery and their contribution to spaceflight.

John,

Thanks for responding. I truly admire your dedication and the fact that you drove all that way for the ceremony! And then to post your photos... they made me feel like I got to be there to! Thanks for including the Hickam photo. I have such a soft spot in my heart for Mr. Hickam and his wife as they have been most kind to me in the past... they are both such good and inspiring people!

If you aren't home by now, have a safe drive back and thanks again.

We just got back to Indiana a few minutes ago, following the 532 mile return leg of our trip! Thanks for your kind wishes for a smooth ride (it worked!) If you would like a copy of the full-resolution version of my Homer Hickam picture (or all three of them, for that matter) let me know and I'll send them your way. They're 8 megapixel images, so they're big!

John,

532 miles? My butt hurts just thinking about that! Again, I'm impressed by your dedication and fortitude! And I'm glad that the entire trip was a smooth and very moving experience.

Thanks for the high resolution photo offer, sincere thanks. But I think my little old laptop here would just croak under the load! If it's okay with you, I will just save the photos from your post as I see them here--- they look GREAT to me!! But I really appreciate your offer and kindness.

All the best,

Anne
