As part of their ever-interesting talk series, the San Diego Aerospace Museum, home of the Apollo 9 Command Module, are now promoting a talk I certainly plan to attend. On September 8th, there will be a talk on how the museum was able to transport the CM (perhaps the ultimate space collectible!) across the country. For those of you who remember some of my coverage of this on Cs: http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-052604a.html#article and http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-052604a.html#071804 You'll know it was a fascinating, often nailbiting and amusing story!
Information on the talk is here: http://www.aerospacemuseum.org/upcoming/lecture.html I'll be there and I hope to see some other CS-ers there too! Thanks, Francis. |

As those of you who went last night know, we were given a very special treat at the end of the evening after the talk. The museum staff very carefully unscrewed the plastic covering that is over the hatch, and everyone was allowed to carefully poke their head inside the Apollo 9 CM! It's the first time they have ever done that, and was a very special bonus for those who were there. FF |

Nice! I'd love to stick my snout into a famous hatch like that. What did it smell like? |

Just goes to show, you never know what might happen at an event like this! And this was in addition to a wonderful talk... always worth going to these things, you NEVER know!Luckily, the smell of three guys spending ten days in there has long dissipated... ... but it is interesting that you mentioned the smell - it was something I noticed. You know the smell of dusty metal - or perhaps the smell of the dust from the top of a warm TV set? A little like that, just very faint! Thanks, FF | |
