HAGERSTOWN, Maryland (AP) -- The remains of an Army veteran convicted of stabbing an elderly couple to death were interred at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

...this is appalling.

I am lost for words. How the heck was this allowed to happen? Surely those interred at Arlington must meet a specific criteria? To have a convicted murderer buried along with heroe's and heroine's does not seem right.

Here is the URL to the story http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/08/04/arlington.cemetery.ap/

This is tragic!!

I've already e-mailed Arlington to express my thoughts.. and my Congressmen as well. To have him interred in the same cemetery as Presidents, War Heroes, and of course..Astronauts, is a travesty!

According to National Cemetary rules, those convicted of a capital crime and being sentenced to life without parole or the death sentence, are not eligible for internment (Tim McVeigh). In this case, the man in question, was eligible for parole. Thank goodness after 2 murders he did not get the chance to be freed. According to the Cemetary, it is up to the relatives to alert them of any crimes, which was not done. With the number of internments they have there, it would be quite a task to perform background checks on all. Don't get me wrong, this person in no way belongs there, lets hope someone, if not the relatives, our government does the right thing and gets him out of there!

The "loophole" apparently was that he was "eligible" for parole after 50 years in his sentencing. . . for a double murder.
